Chapter 27 - THE BROTHER AT THE GATEEvelyn Cross escaped federal custody during a medical transfer.

Reyes received the call at 5:40 a.m.
Carrie heard Dominic swear downstairs.
She entered the kitchen.
“What?”
He looked at her.
“Evelyn’s gone.”
Carrie did not ask how.
It almost did not matter.
Money.
Connections.
The ledger had already proved institutions could be purchased.
“Grace?”
“Security doubled.”
“Margaret?”
“Moved.”
“Sebastian?”
Dominic hesitated.
“What?”
“He isn’t answering.”
They drove to Sebastian’s house.
Front gate open.
Door unlocked.
Blood in the foyer.
Dominic ran.
“Sebastian!”
No answer.
Then a sound upstairs.
They found him sitting against the bedroom wall.
Bleeding from his side.
Alive.
Carrie immediately called emergency services.
“What happened?”
Sebastian struggled to speak.
“Lydia.”
Dominic froze.
“What about Lydia?”
“They took her.”
Evelyn’s people had entered before dawn.
Sebastian fought.
One stabbed him.
They dragged Lydia away.
Why Lydia?
The answer arrived ten minutes later.
Video.
Lydia sitting in a chair.
Evelyn behind her.
No obvious injuries.
Evelyn looked into the camera.
“Bring the original ledger.”
Carrie’s face hardened.
“Where?”
“The Marino estate.”
Dominic stared.
Their old Westchester estate.
The empty bedroom.
The place where Carrie’s first marriage had died.
Evelyn continued.
“Midnight.”
The video ended.
Sebastian grabbed Dominic’s sleeve.
“Give it to her.”
Dominic stared.
“Sebastian—”
“Give her everything.”
Carrie understood.
Same lesson Dominic learned when Victor kidnapped her.
Evidence stopped mattering when someone you loved became currency.
Reyes planned the operation.
But Evelyn expected police.
So Carrie changed the plan.
At 11:58 p.m., she entered the Marino estate alone.
Again.
Rain outside.
Again.
A suitcase absent this time.
No fear hidden beneath dignity.
Evelyn waited in the old ballroom.
Lydia sat nearby, wrists tied.
Carrie carried the ledger.
“Let her go.”
“First the book.”
“No.”
Evelyn smiled.
“You have become inconvenient.”
“I’ve heard.”
“You were easier when you were simply Dominic’s humiliated wife.”
Carrie went still.
Evelyn knew about Vanessa.
“Did you know?”
“About the affair?”
Evelyn smiled.
“Before you did.”
Carrie’s stomach turned.
“Victor told me everything.”
“You watched my marriage collapse.”
“I encouraged it.”
That hurt more than Carrie expected.
Not because Vanessa mattered now.
Because suddenly an old private humiliation belonged to a larger machine.
Evelyn continued.
“Dominic distracted by Vanessa meant Carrie stopped controlling acquisitions.”
Carrie stared.
“Vanessa was never only Victor’s plan.”
“No.”
“You were involved.”
“Yes.”
Dominic listened through the wire.
His face changed.
Years of guilt acquired another layer.
Not absolution.
Manipulation did not erase choice.
But the architecture around his failure was larger than he knew.
Carrie said:
“You made one mistake.”
“Which?”
“You thought breaking my marriage would make me weaker.”
Evelyn’s smile faded.
Carrie held up the ledger.
“It created Whitaker Advisory.”
Silence.
“It made Dominic resign.”
Another step.
“It exposed Victor.”
Another.
“It made Rebecca audit everything.”
Carrie smiled.
“And eventually it brought us here.”
Evelyn lifted her weapon.
“You still think this ends well?”
“No.”
Carrie’s eyes flicked toward Lydia.
“I think endings are rarely that clean.”
Then the lights went out.
Evelyn fired.
Carrie dropped.
Glass shattered.
Dominic entered through the side hall.
Federal agents breached the rear.
Evelyn grabbed Lydia.
Sebastian appeared at the front entrance.
He should have been in the hospital.
He had left against medical advice.
“Let her go.”
Lydia screamed:
“Sebastian, no!”
Evelyn aimed.
Dominic saw it.
So did Sebastian.
The shot fired.
Sebastian jerked.
Lydia screamed.
Dominic fired once toward the ceiling beam beside Evelyn.
She flinched.
Agents tackled her.
Carrie ran to Sebastian.
Blood spread across his chest.
“No.”
Sebastian looked at Dominic.
“Guess…”
He coughed.
“…I’m terrible at medical advice.”
Dominic pressed both hands against the wound.
“Shut up.”
Sebastian almost smiled.
“Little brother…”
“Don’t.”
“You’re bossy.”
“Don’t you dare.”
Sebastian looked toward Lydia.
Alive.
Then back at Dominic.
“For once…”
His breathing hitched.
“…I got there in time.”
His eyes closed.
Dominic shouted for paramedics.
At the hospital, surgeons operated for five hours.
The bullet had passed beneath Sebastian’s collarbone.
Missed the artery.
Missed the lung by millimeters.
He survived.
When he woke, Dominic sat beside him.
Sebastian whispered:
“Still here?”
Dominic nodded.
“Unfortunately.”
Sebastian smiled.
Then Dominic said:
“You called me little brother.”
“I was heavily medicated.”
“You weren’t.”
“Prove it.”
Dominic laughed.
It was the first time either man had laughed without resentment between them.
Outside the room, Lydia heard.
She covered her mouth.
Carrie put an arm around her.
May you like
Forty years late.
Still family.
