Chapter 7 - Clara’s Last Secret

Dante believed Clara had died childless.

That belief lasted nine years.

Sofia changed everything.

The digital ledger revealed that six months before her death, Clara had secretly funded a woman named Teresa Bell.

Teresa lived in Milwaukee.

Dante and Emily found her.

When Teresa opened the door and saw Dante, she nearly fainted.

“No.”

Dante showed Sofia’s photograph.

“Where is she?”

Teresa started crying.

“She told me you might come someday.”

“Clara?”

Teresa nodded.

The truth was not what Dante expected.

Sofia was not Clara’s biological daughter.

She was Vincent’s.

Vincent had fathered a child with a young woman who later died.

When Clara discovered Vincent was alive, she also discovered the baby.

Vincent intended to use the child as leverage within the family.

Clara secretly rescued Sofia and placed her with Teresa.

She had protected an innocent child from the man trying to murder her.

Dante sat down.

Every new truth made Clara larger in death.

Not perfect.

Brave.

Terrified.

Human.

Sofia entered the room.

She stared at Dante.

“Are you Uncle Dante?”

His throat closed.

“Yes.”

“Aunt Clara said you might find me.”

Emily turned away to hide tears.

Sofia brought him a box.

Inside were letters Clara had written.

One was addressed to Dante.

He opened it.

Clara explained everything.

She had hidden Sofia because she feared Vincent would use the child.

She begged Dante not to turn Sofia into another soldier in the Marino war.

Then came the final paragraph.

If I fail, please do not build your life around my grave. Love me, remember me, and then live. I married a man with a ridiculous laugh. I hope someone gives it back to you.

Dante stopped reading.

Emily was crying now.

So was he.

Sofia looked between them.

“Is she the person?”

Dante wiped his face.

“What?”

“The person who gave your laugh back.”

Silence.

Emily looked at Dante.

Dante looked at her.

“Yes,” he said.

Emily’s breath caught.

“Yes, she is.”

That night, Dante sat beside Emily on Teresa’s porch.

No bodyguards close enough to hear.

No business.

No guns.

Just two exhausted people beneath a Wisconsin sky.

“I loved Clara,” Dante said.

“I know.”

“I always will.”

“I know.”

He looked at Emily.

“And I love you.”

She went completely still.

Dante almost smiled.

“That frightened you more than the gun.”

“Considerably.”

“Why?”

“Because guns are straightforward.”

He laughed softly.

Emily touched his face.

“I love you too.”

They kissed.

For one night, the ghosts became quiet.

Then Dante’s phone rang.

The gala security team had found something.

Vincent had changed the plan.

The attack was no longer scheduled for tomorrow.

It had already begun.

And Leo was missing again.

This time, he had not walked away.

There was blood in his room.
