FIVE MINUTES WITH THE DEVIL / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8 - The Man Behind the Name

Falling in love with Dominic Valenti was easier than living with what his name meant.

He wasn't innocent.

He never pretended to be.

His empire had inherited dirty money and violent history.

But Dominic had spent years moving operations into legitimate businesses.

Not everyone appreciated that transformation.

Especially Vincent Caruso.

Caruso controlled what remained of Chicago's old criminal network.

And Anthony Moretti's ledger contained enough evidence to destroy him.

Two months after Sophie's birthday, Dominic received a photograph.

It showed Sophie leaving preschool.

Written beneath it:

Destroy the ledger or become the father she loses.

Dominic didn't tell me.

That was his mistake.

I found out when I overheard Marco doubling security.

I confronted Dominic.

“You promised.”

“I promised to protect you.”

“No. You promised we were partners.”

His silence infuriated me.

“You don't get to lock me in your mansion every time you're afraid.”

“You think this is about control?”

“I think you don't know the difference.”

He flinched.

Good.

I wanted him to.

“I buried you once,” he said quietly.

“And I survived.”

“I can't bury Sophie.”

“Neither can I.”

His voice rose.

“I know!”

Sophie appeared in the doorway.

We stopped.

She held Mr. Buttons.

“Are you mad?”

Dominic crouched immediately.

“Not at you.”

“At Mommy?”

He looked at me.

“No.”

I crossed my arms.

“Yes.”

Dominic almost smiled.

Sophie sighed dramatically.

“Say sorry.”

“To whom?” Dominic asked.

“Everybody.”

So we did.

Later, after Sophie slept, Dominic showed me Caruso's threat.

I made a decision.

We wouldn't destroy the ledger.

We would release it.

Every page.

Every account.

Every crime that could be verified.

Dominic resisted.

Then understood.

Secrets had controlled my life for eleven years.

I wasn't keeping another.

Federal prosecutors prepared indictments.

Journalists received authenticated files.

Businesses connected to Caruso froze his accounts.

His empire began collapsing before sunrise.

At 6:12 a.m., Caruso retaliated.

A vehicle crashed through the Valenti estate gate.

Gunfire erupted.

Dominic pushed me and Sophie behind a stone wall.

Security responded.

The attack lasted ninety seconds.

It felt like an hour.

Then silence.

Dominic had blood on his shirt.

This time it was his.

“Daddy!”

Sophie screamed.

A bullet had struck his side.

He collapsed.

At the hospital, I sat beside him for seven hours.

The surgeon said the bullet missed every major organ.

I cried anyway.

When Dominic woke, I was furious.

“You're an idiot.”

His eyes barely opened.

“Hello to you too.”

“You scared Sophie.”

“Sorry.”

“You scared me.”

His expression softened.

“Sorry.”

I held his hand.

“You're not allowed to die.”

“Very controlling.”

“Dominic.”

His thumb moved against mine.

“I'll try.”

Sophie entered wearing a visitor sticker.

She climbed carefully onto the chair beside him.

“You got a boo-boo.”

“I noticed.”

She kissed his hand.

“Better?”

“Much.”

Then she looked at me.

“Mommy should kiss it.”

Dominic raised an eyebrow.

“Doctor's orders.”

I laughed through tears.

Caruso was arrested the following morning.

The attack had given prosecutors everything they needed.

Dominic spent two weeks recovering.

During that time, something changed.

He began handing control of questionable businesses to independent management.

He sold others.

He created a foundation in Anthony Moretti's name for victims of trafficking.

“You don't have to become someone else,” I told him.

“I know.”

“Then why?”

He looked toward the garden, where Sophie was chasing snowflakes.

“Because someday she's going to ask what her father does.”

May you like

He turned to me.

“And I want an answer she can be proud of.”
