Chapter 6 - The Woman Behind the Locked Door

Elena Duca had not spoken to Marcus in eleven months.

Not because they were estranged.

Because after suffering a stroke, speech had become difficult and exhausting.

She lived quietly in the north wing under private medical care, appearing for family dinners only when she chose.

Marcus had never considered her dangerous.

That was his mistake.

He found her sitting beside the fireplace with the original family trust document across her lap.

She looked at Veronica.

Then at Amelia.

Her eyes filled with tears.

Amelia moved closer to her mother.

Elena raised one trembling hand.

She signed.

Veronica stared.

Marcus noticed.

"You understand her?"

"A little. Amelia's school taught basic sign language last year. We practiced together."

Elena signed again.

Veronica translated slowly.

"She says... she has been waiting six years."

Marcus felt the floor shift beneath him.

"For what?"

Elena pointed at Amelia.

For her.

Marcus crouched beside his mother.

"You knew?"

Tears slipped down Elena's cheeks.

She nodded.

Veronica recoiled.

"You knew my daughter existed?"

Elena signed rapidly.

Veronica struggled to follow.

"Slow down."

Elena stopped.

Then carefully:

I knew there was a baby. I did not know where.

Marcus stared.

"Father told you?"

She shook her head.

Then pointed to herself.

She had discovered it.

Elena opened the trust document.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Marcus recognized Vittorio's handwriting.

He read.

His father had written that any child Marcus produced with a woman outside approved family circles would be considered a threat to succession.

The language was clinical.

Cruel.

Bloodline integrity.

Control.

Legacy.

Veronica looked away.

Marcus crushed the paper in his fist.

Elena slapped his hand.

Everyone froze.

She pulled the document back and flattened it.

Amelia whispered, "I like her."

Veronica nearly laughed.

Elena smiled at the child.

Then signed.

Vittorio wanted control. Giovanni wanted freedom. Marcus wanted approval. Everyone forgot the baby was a person.

Marcus lowered his eyes.

Even without a voice, his mother could still dismantle him.

"Who helped Father?"

Elena's hands stopped.

Fear appeared.

Marcus noticed.

"Mother."

She shook her head.

"Tell me."

She pointed toward the door.

Raymond stood there.

Everyone went still.

Raymond's face emptied.

Marcus slowly rose.

"No."

Elena pointed again.

Raymond stepped backward.

"Marcus, listen."

Marcus moved between Raymond and the others.

"You had access credentials."

"Yes."

"You were Father's security chief before you were mine."

"Yes."

"You deleted the footage."

"No."

Elena struck the arm of her chair.

Then signed furiously.

Veronica translated.

"She says... Raymond didn't delete it."

Marcus stared.

Elena pointed at Raymond again and made another sign.

"She says he knows who did."

Raymond closed his eyes.

Marcus's voice became quiet.

"Who?"

Raymond said nothing.

"Who?"

Finally:

"My wife."

Marcus stared.

Raymond's wife, Catherine, had died five years earlier.

Or Marcus believed she had.

Raymond continued.

"Catherine worked for your father before we married. Records, accounts, private correspondence."

"She died."

"No."

Veronica whispered, "What?"

Raymond looked ashamed.

"She disappeared."

Marcus took a step toward him.

"You lied to me for five years?"

"I thought she was dead for the first two. Then I received a message."

"From her?"

"Yes."

"What did it say?"

Raymond looked at Amelia.

Marcus understood.

"She knew."

Raymond nodded.

"She helped Vittorio track Veronica."

Marcus nearly hit him.

Raymond did not move.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because Catherine threatened my son."

Marcus stopped.

Raymond had a son studying abroad.

Marcus had met him twice.

"If I exposed her, she would release evidence implicating him in financial crimes she committed using his identity."

Veronica shook her head.

"Everyone in this family protects someone by lying to someone else."

Nobody contradicted her.

Marcus looked at Raymond.

"Where is Catherine?"

"I don't know."

"Find out."

A voice came from behind them.

"I think I can help."

Giovanni stood in the doorway.

Marcus reached for his gun.

Elena struck the chair again.

"Apparently Mom doesn't want you shooting me," Giovanni said.

Marcus did not lower the weapon.

Amelia peeked around Veronica.

"Who's that?"

Giovanni looked at her.

For the first time, his confidence disappeared.

"Your uncle."

Amelia studied him.

"You look like Marcus but less angry."

Giovanni smiled.

"I've waited my entire life for someone to say that."

Marcus lowered the gun reluctantly.

Giovanni placed a flash drive on the table.

"Catherine is alive."

Raymond went pale.

"Where?"

"Chicago."

Marcus stared.

Giovanni continued.

"And she's the one who exposed Amelia."

Veronica stepped protectively in front of her daughter.

"Why?"

"Because Catherine controls three shell companies that receive the trust if neither Marcus nor I qualifies."

Marcus understood.

"She wants us both removed."

"Exactly."

"And Amelia?"

"She makes Marcus almost impossible to remove legally."

"So Catherine needs her gone."

Giovanni's silence answered.

Veronica took Amelia's hand.

"We're leaving."

Marcus turned.

"Absolutely not."

"I am not keeping her in a house where every person has a secret enemy."

"Leaving makes you vulnerable."

"Staying makes her a target."

Amelia tugged Veronica's sleeve.

"Mama."

"What?"

"I don't want to run anymore."

Veronica froze.

Amelia's eyes filled.

"We always leave when you're scared."

The words devastated her.

"I don't want another new school. I don't want to hide."

Veronica crouched.

"I was trying to protect you."

"I know."

Amelia hugged her.

"But maybe we can protect us here."

Marcus looked away.

He had spent six years believing power meant making people obey.

A six-year-old had just defined it better.

Together.

Giovanni plugged the drive into a laptop.

"There is one more thing you need to see."

A video appeared.

Catherine stood inside a hotel room.

Beside her was a man.

Veronica gasped.

Marcus's expression turned murderous.

The man was the obstetrician Vittorio had paid six years earlier.

Catherine looked directly into the hidden camera.

"The girl is confirmed," she said. "But Marcus can never know the second result."

Marcus leaned forward.

"What second result?"

The doctor handed Catherine a folder.

She opened it.

And smiled.

"Perfect," she said. "Then Veronica Thompson has no idea what she's carrying."

The recording ended.

Marcus looked at Veronica.

She was trembling.

"What does that mean?"

No one answered.

Then Elena began signing.

Veronica watched.

Her face slowly lost all color.

Marcus turned.

"What is she saying?"

Veronica looked at him.

"She says there were two prenatal DNA tests."

Marcus stared.

"Two?"

Elena nodded.

May you like

Veronica's voice broke.

"Marcus... Amelia wasn't the only secret your father discovered."
