Chapter 8 - The Longest Forty Minutes

Emma did not scream again.
That frightened Daniel.
She became completely still.
Then she looked at Marcus.
“Find my daughter.”
Those three words carried more force than any panic could have.
State police sealed every road around the property.
Helicopters were requested.
Federal agents joined the search.
The fake cruiser had been found abandoned less than a mile away.
Inside were disposable phones, bloodstained gauze, and a second set of license plates.
No Lily.
No Ethan.
Daniel stood in the living room while investigators moved around him.
His mind kept creating images he could not survive.
Emma walked over.
“Stop.”
He looked at her.
“You’re doing it again.”
“What?”
“Going somewhere in your head where everyone is already dead.”
Daniel stared.
“How can you possibly be calm?”
“I’m not.”
Her voice broke.
“I am one breath away from collapsing.”
Daniel’s face changed.
Emma stepped closer.
“But if I collapse, I lose time.”
He nodded.
Together.
That was the word neither said.
But for the first time since Lily’s birth, they were facing catastrophe as partners.
Not husband and wife.
Not yet.
Parents.
Daniel’s phone buzzed.
A video call.
Ethan.
Agents immediately began tracing.
Daniel answered.
Ethan appeared inside a dark room.
Blood stained his shirt.
Behind him, Lily lay inside her car seat.
Emma covered her mouth.
The baby was crying.
Alive.
Daniel’s knees nearly buckled.
Ethan smiled.
“There she is.”
Emma stepped into frame.
“Ethan.”
His expression changed.
“You must be Emma.”
“Please keep her warm.”
Daniel looked at her.
Of everything she could have said, that was what she chose.
Ethan frowned.
“The room is cold. She’s a newborn. Wrap the blanket around her chest but keep it away from her face.”
“You’re giving me instructions?”
“Yes.”
Emma’s voice remained steady.
“She was premature. She has trouble maintaining temperature.”
Ethan looked toward the baby.
For one second, he seemed human.
Then his expression hardened.
“I want Daniel.”
“You have him.”
“I want twenty million dollars.”
Daniel immediately said, “Done.”
Emma snapped her eyes toward him.
Ethan laughed.
“See? That easy.”
Daniel said, “Tell me where.”
“Crypto.”
“I need time.”
“You have thirty minutes.”
Daniel leaned toward the phone.
“If you hurt her—”
Emma touched his arm.
Daniel stopped.
Emma looked at Ethan.
“You don’t want to hurt Lily.”
“You don’t know me.”
“I know you could have already done it.”
Silence.
“You haven’t.”
Ethan stared at her.
Emma continued.
“You’re angry at Daniel.”
“At his family.”
“Then talk to him.”
“I am.”
“No.”
Emma’s voice became softer.
“You’re talking through my daughter because you’re afraid no one listens unless somebody is terrified.”
Daniel looked at Emma in astonishment.
Ethan’s face tightened.
“You think you understand me?”
“I understand being abandoned.”
That landed.
Emma swallowed.
“My husband left me during labor.”
Daniel closed his eyes briefly.
“I was taken into emergency surgery while he chose someone else.”
Ethan glanced at Daniel.
Emma continued.
“For fifteen days, I felt like I didn’t matter.”
Her eyes filled.
“But Lily didn’t cause that.”
Ethan looked away.
“Neither did you cause what happened to your father.”
Silence.
The connection stayed active.
Agents traced it.
Marcus whispered.
“Keep him talking.”
Emma heard.
“Your mother gave us Thomas Mercer’s letter.”
Ethan looked back sharply.
“What letter?”
Daniel’s eyes widened.
Emma continued carefully.
“Your father grabbed the steering wheel.”
“That’s a lie.”
“Thomas admitted stealing money. He admitted betraying your father.”
Ethan’s breathing changed.
“But the accident wasn’t what you were told.”
“Shut up.”
“Your mother has proof.”
“I said shut up!”
Lily began crying louder.
Ethan looked toward her.
Emma fought panic.
“Pick her up.”
“What?”
“She needs comfort.”
“I’m not touching her.”
“Then bring the car seat closer.”
Ethan hesitated.
Finally, he moved toward Lily.
The camera angle changed.
For half a second, a window became visible behind him.
Marcus froze the trace screen.
“Got a landmark.”
An old church steeple.
A lake.
One road.
Police narrowed the location.
Daniel kept Ethan talking.
“You hated me because of my father.”
“I hate you because you never paid.”
Daniel swallowed.
“You’re right.”
Emma looked at him.
“I never paid.”
Daniel continued.
“I inherited money built partly through what my father stole.”
Ethan stared.
Daniel’s next words surprised everyone.
“So take it.”
Emma’s eyes widened.
“I’ll create a restitution trust for every dollar traceable to the old Hayes partnership.”
Ethan laughed.
“You think this is about accounting?”
“No.”
Daniel’s voice cracked.
“I think money is the only part I can repair.”
Silence.
“I can’t give you back your father.”
Daniel looked at Lily on the screen.
“And you can’t give me back the first night of my daughter’s life.”
Emma’s eyes filled.
“We both lost things.”
Daniel’s voice hardened.
“But if you hurt Lily, you create a loss nobody can repair.”
Ethan looked down.
For several seconds, rage seemed to fight exhaustion.
Then sirens sounded faintly through the phone.
Ethan’s head snapped up.
“You traced me.”
The screen went black.
Marcus shouted the location.
Everyone moved.
The drive lasted eleven minutes.
For Emma, it lasted years.
The building was an abandoned summer lodge near Lake Champlain.
Police surrounded it.
Daniel tried to exit the vehicle.
An agent stopped him.
“You stay here.”
“My daughter is inside.”
“So is an armed suspect.”
Emma grabbed Daniel’s hand.
He looked down.
It was the first time she had touched him willingly since the hospital.
“Stay.”
Daniel nodded.
Minutes passed.
Then a gunshot.
Emma screamed.
Daniel lunged toward the door.
Agents restrained him.
Another gunshot.
Then radio chatter.
“Suspect down.”
Emma stopped breathing.
“Infant secured.”
She collapsed against Daniel.
He held her.
They both cried.
Minutes later, a paramedic emerged carrying Lily.
Emma ran.
The paramedic placed the baby into her arms.
“She’s okay. Cold, hungry, scared. But she’s okay.”
Emma kissed Lily repeatedly.
Daniel stood three feet away.
He did not intrude.
Emma looked at him.
“Come here.”
Daniel stepped forward.
Emma shifted Lily between them.
Their foreheads touched over their daughter.
For one moment, nothing else existed.
Not betrayal.
Not Olivia.
Not divorce papers.
Just gratitude.
Behind them, Ethan was carried out on a stretcher.
Alive.
Shot in the shoulder.
As he passed, he looked at Daniel.
Daniel looked back.
Neither spoke.
There was nothing left worth saying.
But later that night, as Lily slept safely beside Emma in a hospital room, Daniel made a decision.
He called Rachel.
“I want to amend the separation agreement.”
Rachel frowned.
“How?”
“Everything Emma asked for.”
Daniel looked at his sleeping daughter.
“And more.”
“What does that mean?”
“The penthouse. Financial support. Full temporary custody if she wants it.”
Rachel paused.
“You understand she hasn’t asked for that?”
“I know.”
“Why are you doing this?”
Daniel looked toward Emma sleeping in the chair nearby.
“Because I finally understand that loving someone doesn’t mean making it difficult for them to leave.”
May you like
He lowered his voice.
“Sometimes it means making sure they’re safe enough to choose freely.”
