Chapter 1 - SOMEWHERE BETTER

Elena Vance had learned to remain unnoticed.
At 23, she lived in a cramped apartment in Queens and worked at the Velvet Lounge, an exclusive nightclub in Manhattan's Meatpacking District. She had soft features, dark wavy hair, and brown eyes the color of roasted coffee. Her appearance attracted attention she did not want, particularly in an establishment where wealthy customers frequently treated employees as though ordinary boundaries did not apply to them.
She preferred to keep her head down, finish her shifts, collect her wages and tips, and return home.
The Velvet Lounge catered to investment bankers, wealthy heirs, actresses, politicians, and men whose influence was understood without needing explanation. A bottle of Dom Pérignon could cost more than 3 months of Elena's rent.
She disliked the environment. The music was loud, the hours exhausting, and intoxicated customers often pulled at her apron or attempted to touch her as she passed.
But she could not afford to resign.
Her younger brother, Toby, was 10 years old and receiving treatment for a congenital heart defect at NYU Langone Hospital. He needed surgery, and their inadequate insurance could not cover the cost. A specialist's approval and the necessary payments stood between him and the procedure that could save his life.
Elena worked because Toby depended on her.
That Friday night, the Velvet Lounge was especially crowded. Deep house music vibrated through the floor, and the air carried the mixed smells of perfume, perspiration, and spilled alcohol.
""Table 4 needs wiping down, Elena. Move it. You're not paid to daydream.""
Greg, the floor manager, stood nearby, visibly irritated.
He wore shiny suits and excessive cheap cologne. He regularly intimidated the waiting staff and used their financial insecurity to keep them obedient.
""I'm going, Greg,"" Elena replied.
She collected a tray and cleaning supplies, then moved through the crowded nightclub toward Table 4.
The VIP booth was upholstered in crushed red velvet. Its previous occupants had left spilled mixers, broken glass, and cigarette ash ground into the expensive fabric.
Elena began cleaning.
As she scrubbed a stubborn stain, she heard 2 security guards speaking near the velvet rope.
""I heard he's coming tonight,"" 1 said, adjusting his earpiece.
""Who?""
""Dante Vancel.""
The other guard went pale.
""I thought he was in Italy dealing with the Calabrazzi family.""
""Ideally, he stays there. If he's here, it means heads are going to roll. Make sure the private entrance is clear. If anyone blocks his path, I'm not taking the bullet.""
Elena stopped scrubbing for a moment.
She knew the name.
Almost everyone in New York knew of Dante Vancel, even if relatively few had encountered him personally.
The Vancel family exercised enormous influence over construction, shipping, and imports. Their business interests extended into the city's criminal underworld, and Dante was believed to receive a portion of the profits from countless transactions moving through New York.
His reputation was used to intimidate rivals. People described him as a man who controlled much of the city's skyline and possessed information capable of destroying influential figures.
Elena felt suddenly cold.
She had no desire to attract the attention of someone like him.
She reminded herself to finish the shift, collect her tips, return home, and put the money toward Toby's medical bills.
When she straightened, her back was aching.
Greg appeared and grabbed her upper arm.
His fingers dug into her skin.
""You missed a spot.""
His breath smelled of stale coffee and cigarettes.
""And smile, for God's sake. You look like a funeral mute. The high rollers are coming in. If I see you looking miserable again, you're fired. Do you hear me?""
""I hear you, Greg. Please let go.""
Elena winced.
""I'll let go when you do your job.""
He leaned closer.
""Maybe if you were nicer to me, I'd put you on the bar where the real tips are. But you're too stuck up, aren't you?""
He shoved her away.
Elena stumbled and caught herself against the edge of the booth.
Tears gathered in her eyes, but she forced herself to remain composed.
Toby's surgery was scheduled for the following week. Losing her job could jeopardize the money she was struggling to collect.
""I'm sorry, Greg. It won't happen again.""
""Damn right it won't.""
He walked toward the bar.
Elena adjusted her apron and smoothed the black dress the establishment required its waitresses to wear.
The uniform was plain and shapeless, intended to make employees look interchangeable.
Most nights, Elena appreciated the anonymity it offered.
At 11:45 p.m., the atmosphere changed.
The DJ lowered the volume of the music and transitioned into a slower, darker track.
The large double doors at the entrance to the VIP section opened.
Four heavily built men entered first, dressed in suits and wearing earpieces.
They examined the room with practiced attention, then cleared a path through the customers.
People who had been drinking and shouting moments before stepped aside.
Even the wealthy patrons who ordinarily expected everyone else to accommodate them lowered their eyes and moved out of the way.
Dante Vancel entered behind his security detail.
He was taller than Elena expected, standing over 6 feet 3 inches, with broad shoulders and a charcoal 3-piece suit that appeared exceptionally expensive.
His dark hair was combed back precisely. His face was defined by high cheekbones, a strong jaw, light stubble, and gray eyes resembling storm clouds.
Elena had imagined a visibly brutal man, perhaps with prominent scars and an intimidating manner.
Instead, Dante appeared controlled and impeccably dressed.
He walked through the nightclub without acknowledging the people watching him.
His confidence suggested that he had never needed to ask permission to enter a room.
He took a seat in the central VIP booth, the same one Elena had just cleaned.
His bodyguards arranged themselves around him, facing outward.
Greg hurried over.
He was sweating.
""Mr. Vancel, we didn't know you were honoring us tonight. I would have prepared the vintage stock. Please, this way. Let me get you—""
Dante raised 1 finger.
Greg immediately stopped speaking.
""Whiskey,"" Dante said. ""Macallan 52. Leave the bottle.""
""Of course, sir. Immediately.""
Greg rushed toward the bar, snapping instructions at the bartenders.
Elena remained near the service station with an empty tray in her hands.
She wanted to return to the kitchen, but the security detail blocked her usual route.
She stayed close to the wall, hoping no one would notice her.
Dante leaned back in his booth.
His eyes moved across the room, taking in the customers and their surroundings without obvious interest.
Then his gaze reached the service station.
He saw Elena.
He stopped looking elsewhere.
She became aware of his attention immediately.
His eyes studied her face, her dark hair, her uniform, and her tense posture.
He continued watching for several seconds.
Elena felt her heart begin to race.
She silently hoped he would turn away.
Instead, Dante stood.
The movement caused a visible reaction among the guests.
Without signaling his guards, he walked out of the booth, crossed the VIP section, and approached the service station.
He stopped approximately 2 feet from Elena.
At that distance, she noticed the scent of expensive leather and sandalwood.
""What is your name?"" he asked.
""E-Elena.""
She tightened her grip on the tray.
""Elena Vance.""
Dante tilted his head slightly.
""Elena.""
He repeated her name as though committing it to memory.
Then he extended his hand.
""Dance with me.""
The request drew immediate attention from the nearby tables.
Elena stared at him.
Men like Dante Vancel did not ordinarily invite employees to dance in the middle of their shifts. She did not know what he wanted or what refusing might cost her.
""I can't, sir.""
Several people gasped.
A glass fell somewhere nearby and shattered.
Dante's expression remained controlled, but his eyes darkened.
""You can't?""
""I'm working,"" Elena whispered. ""I have tables to clear. My manager, he'll fire me.""
Dante studied her.
Then the corner of his mouth rose in a faint smile.
""You're working.""
""Yes, sir.""
Greg appeared before Elena could say anything further.
He forced his way between them and grabbed her arm.
""Mr. Vancel, I am so sorry. This stupid girl doesn't know who you are. She's new. She's an idiot. I'll have her thrown out immediately.""
He turned toward Elena.
""Get your things and get the hell out of my club.""
His fingers tightened around her arm.
""You embarrassed me,"" he hissed.
Elena flinched.
""I'm sorry. I just—""
""Let go of her.""
Dante spoke quietly.
Greg froze.
Dante was no longer smiling.
His attention rested on the manager's hand.
""I said, remove your hand from her before I remove it from your body.""
Greg released her immediately.
His hands began shaking.
""Mr. Vancel, I was just disciplining my staff. She disrespected you.""
""She told me she had a job to do,"" Dante answered. ""That is not disrespect. That is loyalty, something you clearly lack.""
He reached inside his jacket.
The movement caused his bodyguards to tense.
Dante withdrew a thick white envelope and dropped it onto a nearby table.
""What is your hourly rate?"" he asked Elena.
""Minimum wage plus tips, sir.""
She rubbed the arm Greg had grabbed.
""That envelope contains $10,000,"" Dante said. ""I am buying your shift. I am buying your time. You are no longer working for the Velvet Lounge. You are working for me.""
He turned toward Greg.
""Is she clocked out?""
""Yes. Yes, absolutely. She's off the clock.""
Greg nodded rapidly.
""Take her. She's yours.""
Dante looked at him with disgust.
""She is not cattle to be traded, you pathetic worm. I am paying for her company because she declined to give it for free.""
He turned back toward Elena and stepped closer.
His fingers touched her chin, guiding her face upward.
""Now,"" he said quietly, ""the excuse of work is gone. The manager is silenced. Dance with me, Elena.""
Elena looked at the envelope.
$10,000 could pay for months of Toby's medication. It could also cover the rent arrears threatening their apartment.
She returned her attention to Dante.
Something about his expression unsettled her. He appeared to recognize her in a way she could not explain.
""Okay,"" she whispered.
Dante nodded.
He took her hand and led her toward the exit.
Elena struggled to keep pace with his long strides.
""Wait. You said dance.""
""I don't dance in public clubs, Elena,"" he replied. ""And certainly not in a place that smells like cheap cologne and desperation.""
""Where are we going?""
