Chapter 4 - The Room Behind the BookshelfThe key opened nothing in Lucy’s life.

Not her apartment.
Not her father’s old desk.
Not any lock inside the Moretti estate that Dante’s security team could identify.
For 2 days, Lucy barely left the library.
She studied her father’s surviving papers while Dante dismantled Felix’s network.
By Thursday evening, 3 employees had disappeared from the estate.
Lucy did not ask where.
Dante did not volunteer.
Their strange partnership developed rules.
Lucy translated.
Dante listened.
She corrected him.
He glared.
She corrected him again.
And every evening at midnight, he brought her coffee himself.
On the third night, Lucy noticed something.
Her father’s photograph.
Behind Samuel Warren and Levanov stood a bookshelf.
Lucy had seen it before.
Not in her childhood.
Here.
She ran upstairs.
Dante followed.
“Lucy.”
“The west study.”
“That room has been sealed for years.”
“Why?”
“My father used it.”
Exactly.
Dante unlocked it.
Dust covered everything.
Unlike the rest of the estate, this room had been untouched.
Lucy walked toward the shelves.
She compared the photograph.
Same carved wood.
Same damaged corner.
She inserted the tiny key into a nearly invisible hole beneath the third shelf.
Click.
The entire bookcase shifted.
Dante drew his gun.
Behind it was a narrow room.
Lucy stared.
Inside sat an old desk, recording equipment, and dozens of labeled tapes.
Her father’s handwriting covered every box.
Russian.
Italian.
French.
German.
Spanish.
Lucy stepped inside.
For the first time in years, she could almost smell Samuel’s terrible coffee.
She touched a notebook.
Her composure broke.
Dante remained at the entrance.
He gave her privacy without leaving.
Lucy wiped her face.
“Don’t.”
“Don’t what?”
“Pretend you didn’t see me cry.”
“I wasn’t.”
“You’re standing there looking politely at the wall.”
“I have been accused of many things. Politeness is new.”
She laughed through her tears.
Dante finally approached.
One tape had been marked:
FOR LUCY.
Her fingers froze.
They found an old player.
Lucy inserted the cassette.
Static crackled.
Then her father’s voice filled the room.
“Lucy, if you are hearing this, then I failed to come home.”
She covered her mouth.
Dante looked away.
Samuel explained everything.
He had discovered Sanz’s operation.
He had also discovered that somebody inside the Moretti family was protecting it.
Not Dante.
Dante had been 21.
His father, Lorenzo Moretti, had ordered Samuel to collect proof.
Samuel had trusted him.
That trust had killed them both.
Because the traitor had been someone close enough to Lorenzo to intercept every investigation.
Samuel never named the traitor on the recording.
Instead, he left a clue.
“The man who betrays Moretti will always translate loyalty into profit.”
The tape clicked off.
Lucy frowned.
“That sounds like one of his puzzles.”
Dante stared at the boxes.
“Maybe not.”
They searched until sunrise.
Then Lucy found financial documents written in German.
A shell corporation.
Another in French.
A third in Spanish.
Each used slightly different names.
But the initials remained identical.
E.V.M.
Lucy looked at Dante.
“What?”
She showed him.
His face hardened.
“Enzo Vittorio Moretti.”
“Enzo?”
“My father’s cousin.”
“The man who grabbed Felix?”
“Yes.”
Lucy felt cold.
Enzo had access to everything.
Security.
Shipments.
Dante.
Her.
“Maybe it’s coincidence.”
Dante looked at her.
“You don’t believe that.”
“No.”
“Neither do I.”
Footsteps sounded outside.
Dante killed the lamp.
Lucy held her breath.
The hidden door began opening.
Dante pushed Lucy behind him.
A figure entered.
Enzo.
He stared at them.
Then at the documents in Lucy’s hand.
Nobody spoke.
Enzo slowly closed the hidden door behind himself.
Dante’s gun remained pointed at his chest.
“You have 10 seconds,” Dante said.
Enzo raised his hands.
“If I were the traitor, you’d already be dead.”
“Not persuasive.”
“E.V.M. isn’t me.”
“Your initials disagree.”
“So does my birth certificate.”
Enzo reached slowly into his jacket.
Dante’s finger tightened on the trigger.
Enzo produced an old passport.
He threw it onto the desk.
His full legal name was Enzo Vittorio Caruso.
Lucy stared.
“Then why does everyone call you Moretti?”
“My mother remarried into the family.”
Dante lowered the gun slightly.
“Who is E.V.M.?”
Enzo looked at him.
“Your mother.”
Dante stopped breathing.
Elisabetta Valentina Moretti.
Dead for 15 years.
Or so Dante believed.
Enzo placed another photograph on the desk.
A woman stepped from a car in Switzerland.
The photograph was 6 months old.
Lucy looked at Dante.
Every trace of emotion vanished from him.
“That isn’t possible.”
“I thought the same.”
Dante stared at the image of the mother whose funeral he had attended as a teenager.
Enzo continued.
“She never died. Lorenzo hid her after discovering what she was involved in.”
“Why would my father lie to me?”
“To keep you alive.”
Dante said nothing.
Enzo pointed toward Samuel’s archive.
“Sanz isn’t trying to destroy the Moretti organization.”
Lucy understood first.
“He’s trying to recover something for her.”
Enzo nodded.
“And if Elisabetta knows Lucy opened this room, she’ll come herself.”
A soft electronic beep interrupted him.
Dante looked toward the security panel.
The west wing had lost power.
Then the hallway lights died.
Enzo drew his weapon.
Dante grabbed Lucy.
A woman’s voice came through the estate intercom.
Elegant.
Calm.
Italian.
“Hello, Dante.”
Dante’s face went white.
May you like
Lucy did not need a translation.
“Mother?”
