Chapter 1 - The Gift Box

"“DON’T OPEN THAT GIFT BOX!” THE MAID’S LITTLE GIRL WARNED THE MAFIA BOSS. HER NEXT WORDS LEFT HIM FROZEN
The most powerful mafia boss in Chicago was about to open a birthday gift when his housekeeper’s five-year-old daughter publicly stopped him, exposing a betrayal by someone he trusted with his life. But when the little girl whispered what she had overheard, I realized my own birthday celebration might become the night two hundred people died.
My name is Dante Moretti. For twenty years, men had lowered their voices when I entered a room. I had survived assassination attempts, buried enemies, and learned that loyalty was often just betrayal waiting for the right price.
But nothing prepared me for what happened on my forty-fifth birthday.
It was 9:47 p.m.
Two hundred guests filled my Chicago mansion. Champagne sparkled beneath crystal chandeliers, a string quartet played near the windows, and expensive gifts covered a long white table.
I held a beautiful black box wrapped with a dark red ribbon.
There was no card.
Something about that ribbon bothered me. The bow was almost too perfect, tied with the careful precision of someone who had practiced.
I reached for the knot.
""MR. DANTE! DON'T OPEN THAT!""
The music stopped.
Every conversation died.
I turned and saw Sophie Alvarez, my housekeeper Clara's five-year-old daughter, standing beside the dessert table.
Her yellow dress was wrinkled. Her braid was falling apart. Chocolate frosting stained one cheek.
But her eyes were filled with terror.
Clara rushed forward, her face turning pale.
""Sophie! Sweetheart, apologize immediately!""
""NO, MOMMY!"" Sophie cried. ""He's going to get hurt!""
Two hundred guests stared.
My security chief stepped toward her, but I raised my hand.
""Everyone stays where they are.""
I placed the box down and knelt in front of Sophie.
""Sweetheart,"" I said gently, ""why shouldn't I open my present?""
She glanced toward the crowd.
Then she whispered something that made my blood run cold.
""Because Uncle Marcus put something inside it.""
Marcus Bellini.
My closest friend.
My business partner.
The man who had stood beside me at my mother's funeral.
""What did you see, Sophie?""
She swallowed hard.
""A little silver thing. He hid it under the soft stuff inside the box. Then he tied the red ribbon.""
My heartbeat slowed.
""Did he say anything?""
Sophie nodded.
""He was talking on his phone. He said four words two times.""
I leaned closer.
""What four words?""
Her tiny fingers gripped my jacket.
""When he opens it.""
Across the ballroom, Marcus suddenly stopped smiling.
I noticed his hand slipping into his pocket.
Then Sophie whispered again.
""Mr. Dante, there's something else.""
""What is it, sweetheart?""
She began trembling.
""Uncle Marcus said if you don't open it...""
Her eyes filled with tears.
""...he has another way.""
At that exact moment, I heard a faint electronic beep coming from beneath the gift table.
May you like
And Marcus started walking toward the exit.
