Chapter 11 - Shadows at the Harbor Gate

Spring arrived in Ashport not with warmth, but with a sharp, salt-heavy mist that rolled off the North Atlantic and clung to the granite foundations of Raven Hill.
Down at Pier 14, where the Cain family’s container ships docked under the cover of fog, Sadie stood beside Ronan on the wet concrete apron. The wind whipped the hem of her dark wool coat against her knees. She was reviewing the manifest on an encrypted tablet—three cargo freighters carrying specialized medical supplies and modular housing units funded by the Julian Cain Foundation, bound for disaster relief in the Mediterranean.
“The harbor master’s office tried to levy an unauthorized inspection fee on dock three,” Sadie said, her fingers dancing across the screen. Her field experience in logistics made her sharper than any auditor Ronan had ever hired. “They claimed the customs seal was compromised. It wasn't. I pulled the satellite time-stamps from the port buoy. The seal hasn't been touched since it cleared Lisbon.”
Ronan looked down at her, a faint, proud smile touching his lips. “You caught an extortion attempt by the municipal board in forty-five seconds.”
“My father had to move twenty tons of military rations through Turkish customs with three forged signatures and a box of cigars,” Sadie replied without looking up. “Ashport’s city council is amateur compared to NATO supply sergeants.”
Before Ronan could answer, the sharp buzz of Michael’s encrypted radio cut through the damp air.
“Boss,” Michael’s voice crackled through the earpiece. “We have an issue at the North Point distribution center. A legal summons was just delivered to the front desk. It wasn't served by city marshals. It came by private courier from the State Supreme Court in Capital City.”
Ronan’s jaw set. “Who filed it?”
“Helena Vance,” Michael said, the radio crackling with static. “Gabriel Vance’s estranged elder sister. She just arrived on a private flight from Geneva. She’s claiming legal guardianship of Julian’s biological heir—and she’s petitioned the probate judge for an emergency ex parte custody seizure of Poppy.”
Sadie’s tablet dropped half an inch before she caught it, her knuckles turning bone-white.
“Guardianship?” Sadie hissed, her voice vibrating with maternal fury. “She’s a third cousin by marriage who hasn't set foot in this country in twenty years!”

“She doesn't care about the child,” Ronan said, his voice dropping into that chilling, sub-zero register that signaled an impending execution. “Helena Vance was Gabriel’s primary financial conduit in Europe. When we liquidated Vance’s accounts, forty million dollars of offshore trust assets were tied directly to the Cain family bloodline. Under Ashport’s archaic maritime trust statutes, whoever controls Julian’s direct descendant controls the voting majority of the Harbor Development Corporation.”
He took Sadie’s hand, his grip crushing and warm. “Get in the car. We’re going to the courthouse before they send state troopers to St. Jude’s.”
