Chapter 4 - The Dead Man at the Gate

Daniel Harper was standing outside.
Alive.
Tessa watched the security monitor in disbelief.
The man looked older than she remembered. Thinner. Gray threaded his beard. A scar crossed his left cheek.
But it was Daniel.
Roman ordered the gate opened.
Daniel entered with both hands visible.
“No weapons,” Carmine reported.
Roman remained unconvinced.
Tessa stepped forward.
“You’re supposed to be dead.”
Daniel looked at her.
“So was your father.”
The words hit the room like broken glass.
Roman seized Daniel by the collar.
“Choose your next sentence carefully.”
Daniel did not resist.
“Patrick survived the crash.”
Tessa’s face emptied.
“What?”
“For eleven days.”
Roman released Daniel.
“That’s impossible.”
“You were told he died at the scene.”
“By whom?”
Daniel smiled without humor.
“Matteo.”
Roman froze.
Tessa remembered Matteo standing beside the wet bar earlier that night.
Roman’s underboss.
His oldest lieutenant.
The man he trusted to hold the Boyle brothers.
Daniel explained that years earlier he had discovered discrepancies buried inside Valorie Logistics. Small changes. Containers redirected. Security rotations altered.
Every trail touched Matteo without proving anything.
Daniel investigated quietly.
Then his car exploded.
“I wasn’t inside.”
“You let us bury an empty coffin?” Roman asked.
“I needed Matteo to believe I was dead.”
“For three years?”
“I was trying to finish what Patrick started.”
Tessa gripped her father’s key.
“Where does this go?”
Daniel looked at it.
“Union Station.”
A locker.
Patrick had rented it under an alias shortly before the crash.
Daniel believed it contained evidence identifying the person behind the trafficking network.
Roman immediately ordered vehicles prepared.
Tessa shook her head.
“I’m coming.”
“No.”
“You don’t get to decide anymore.”
“It could be a trap.”
“Then protect me.”
The sentence silenced him.
Tessa realized what she had said.
So did Roman.
An hour later they entered Union Station through a service entrance.
Locker 318 stood in an abandoned luggage corridor.
Tessa inserted the key.
Inside was a metal box.
Roman opened it carefully.
No explosive.
Inside were photographs, a cassette recorder, financial documents, and a sealed letter.
Tessa reached for the letter.
Roman studied the photographs.
One showed Matteo.
Another showed Hodges.
A third showed Vittorio Valorie, Roman’s late father.
Roman’s expression hardened.
Then Tessa found the photograph beneath them.
Her father stood beside a woman.
Tessa recognized her.
“Mom?”
Her mother, Claire Quinn, had supposedly known nothing about Patrick’s investigation.
But there she was.
Holding documents.
Meeting Vittorio Valorie.
Tessa opened the letter.
Patrick’s handwriting covered three pages.
He described a hidden network called Meridian.
It had infiltrated ports, police departments, and legitimate businesses.
Vittorio Valorie discovered it too late.
Patrick believed someone inside the Valorie family had protected Meridian.
The final paragraph made Roman stop breathing.
Roman, if you are reading this, do not trust the person who tells you Matteo is the traitor. Matteo knows pieces, but he is not the architect. The architect is someone you love enough to excuse.
Roman read it twice.
Daniel’s face tightened.
“That wasn’t in the copy I saw.”
“You had a copy?” Roman asked.
Daniel hesitated.
Roman understood.
“You knew about this locker.”
Daniel moved backward.
Carmine drew his weapon.
Tessa looked between them.
“Daniel?”
“I was trying to protect you.”
“From whom?”
Daniel’s eyes moved to Roman.
“From him.”
Roman laughed once, coldly.
Daniel continued.
“Ask him where his father died.”
Roman said nothing.
“Ask him, Tessa.”
She looked at Roman.
“Where?”
Roman’s jaw tightened.
“Pier 41.”
The warehouse.
The same warehouse where Tessa had been sent tonight.
Daniel nodded.
“Patrick Quinn investigated Pier 41. Vittorio Valorie died there. Tonight someone sent Patrick’s daughter to the same building.”
Tessa felt sick.
Roman stared at the documents.
Then he noticed something.
A photograph timestamp.
He lifted it.
“Daniel.”
Daniel stopped.
“This photograph supposedly shows Matteo meeting Patrick three days before Patrick’s death.”
“Yes.”
Roman’s eyes became cold.
“Matteo was in Sicily that month.”
Daniel ran.
Carmine lunged after him.
A gunshot exploded.
Tessa screamed.
Daniel collapsed.
But Carmine had not fired.
Roman dragged Tessa behind the lockers.
Another shot shattered a light fixture.
A sniper.
Daniel crawled across the floor, blood spreading beneath his shoulder.
Roman returned fire toward an upper window.
Carmine pulled Daniel into cover.
Daniel grabbed Tessa’s ankle.
She crouched.
His face was white.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“I thought I could control it.”
“Control what?”
Daniel looked toward Roman.
Then whispered:
“They didn’t choose you because of your father.”
Tessa leaned closer.
“What?”
“They chose Roman because of you.”
Daniel lost consciousness.
Sirens approached outside.
Roman stared at Tessa.
May you like
Neither understood.
Yet.
