Chapter 1

By the time Dominic Vale wrapped his arms around his wife on the private runway, everyone watching already believed Claire had lost her mind.\

It was ninety-two degrees in northern New Jersey.\

The August heat shimmered above the concrete. Jet fuel hung sharp in the air. Ground crews moved beneath a white sun, wiping sweat from their faces as the engines of Dominic's Gulfstream whined behind them.\

And Claire Vale stood beside the stairs wearing a charcoal wool overcoat that reached almost to her ankles.\

Dominic's overcoat.\

One he had not worn in years.\

The men surrounding the plane had been trained not to stare at their boss's wife, but several of them did anyway.\

Claire saw the looks.\

She had been seeing them for months.\

Poor woman.\

The boss finally broke her.\

Maybe she was sick.\

Maybe she was unstable.\

Nobody knew the truth.\

And Claire intended to keep it that way until Dominic's plane left American soil.\

Then she would disappear.\

Her fingers tightened around the satin lining inside the coat.\

Hidden in one interior pocket was a thick envelope containing $3,800 in cash, a prepaid phone, and the key to a used Honda parked at a long-term lot near Newark.\

Everything she needed to leave the most feared man in her world.\

Everything except courage.\

She had been collecting the money for five months.\

Five months of buying groceries with cash and hiding the change.\

Five months of selling pieces of jewelry Dominic had given her, one at a time, through shops far from Long Island.\

Five months of sleeping beside a suitcase hidden beneath loose floorboards in an unused guest room.\

And five months of hiding the reason she had to run.\

Underneath Dominic's enormous coat, beneath a loose blue maternity dress, Claire was twenty-one weeks pregnant.\

With his child.\

She rested one trembling hand over the curve of her stomach.\

The baby moved.\

A soft flutter.\

Claire swallowed hard.\

""Just a few more hours,"" she whispered.\

Twenty yards away, Dominic Vale stood with his second-in-command, Vincent Mercer.\

Dominic looked exactly as he always did when leaving for business.\

Controlled.\

Untouchable.\

Dangerously calm.\

At thirty-eight, he had the build of a man who had spent his life expecting violence. His dark suit fit perfectly across broad shoulders. His black hair was clipped short at the sides, and a thin scar crossed one eyebrow, disappearing whenever his face hardened.\

Which was often.\

Especially lately.\

Dominic's organization controlled a collection of shipping companies, warehouses, private security firms, and several businesses that existed mostly to make certain money appeared legitimate.\

Claire knew better than to ask where all of it came from.\

She had once asked too many questions.\

Dominic had looked at her across the dinner table and said, ""The less you know about my world, the longer you stay innocent of it.""\

That sentence had kept her awake for weeks.\

Now he was supposed to fly overseas to settle a dispute threatening his shipping routes.\

Three weeks.\

That was what Vincent had told the household staff.\

Three weeks was more than enough.\

Claire would leave tonight.\

By morning, the Vale mansion would contain one empty bedroom, one abandoned wedding ring, and a husband who would finally understand why his wife had spent half a summer drowning inside his winter coats.\

She was rehearsing her escape again when shouting erupted near the luggage carts.\

Claire turned.\

A young airport worker was on the ground.\

""No! Please!""\

Two of Dominic's men surrounded him.\

One of them, Frank Dorsey, seized the teenager by the collar and dragged him across the concrete.\

Claire's stomach dropped.\

She knew the boy.\

""Eli?""\

Eli Parker was seventeen. His father, Marcus, worked on the landscaping crew at Dominic's estate. Claire had met Eli three times when he came to help his father during school breaks.\

He was polite.\

Shy.\

Still young enough to blush when Claire asked if he wanted lemonade.\

Now he was crying.\

Frank held a small black device between two fingers.\

""Found this taped beneath a cargo case,"" he shouted. ""Kid was trying to plant it.""\

Vincent's expression changed instantly.\

""A tracker?""\

Frank nodded.\

Dominic began walking toward them.\

Eli shook his head wildly.\

""They made me do it. I swear. Somebody called my mom. They said they'd hurt her if I didn't.""\

Frank pulled a handgun from beneath his jacket.\

Claire's blood went cold.\

Eli stared at the weapon.\

""No. No, please. Mr. Vale, please.""\

Dominic stopped several feet away.\

His face revealed nothing.\

Frank pushed Eli down onto his knees.\

Claire knew what happened to people accused of betrayal.\

Nobody held hearings in Dominic's world.\

Nobody waited for explanations.\

""Who gave it to you?"" Dominic asked.\

""I don't know!""\

""Wrong answer.""\

""I swear! A guy left it in my locker. He knew where my mom works. He had pictures of my little sister.""\

Eli was sobbing now.\

Frank lifted the gun.\

Claire moved before she understood what she was doing.\

""Stop!""\

Every head turned.\

She crossed the runway quickly, the heavy coat swaying around her legs.\

""Claire,"" Dominic said.\

It was not a warning.\

It was worse.\

It was confusion.\

She stepped directly between Eli and the gun.\

Frank lowered his weapon instinctively.\

""Mrs. Vale, move.""\

""No.""\

Frank glanced at Dominic.\

Nobody knew what to do.\

Claire knelt beside Eli and pulled his shaking body against her coat.\

""He's seventeen.""\

""He planted a tracker on my aircraft,"" Dominic said.\

""He told you why.""\

""People lie when they're afraid.""\

""So do grown men.""\

A few guards exchanged looks.\

Dominic's eyes narrowed.\

Claire had been his wife for two years, and she had never spoken to him that way.\

She barely recognized herself.\

Maybe motherhood had changed something fundamental inside her.\

Maybe fear had finally become exhausting.\

Maybe there came a moment when a person had been afraid for so long that terror simply had nowhere left to grow.\

Claire reached inside the coat.\

Several guns moved at once.\

Dominic raised one hand.\

""Hold.""\

She pulled out the envelope.\

Her escape fund.\

Every dollar between her and freedom.\

Claire stood and pressed it against Dominic's chest.\

""Take it.""\

He looked down at the envelope.\

""What is this?""\
