Chapter 9 - The Pier 42 MassacreThe industrial sprawl of Pier 42 was swallowed by a driving nor'easter by 11:30 AM. Steel shipping containers stacked four high created a maze of rusted iron canyons, buffeted by thirty-knot winds coming off the Atlantic.

Calvin had guided the launch into an abandoned drainage slip beneath the pier's rotting timber pilings. We climbed the maintenance ladder into the labyrinth of cargo containers, rain plastering our hair to our faces.

"Moretti’s perimeter guards are stationed at the main gate," Natalie reported, checking the tactical feed on her synchronized tablet. "At least thirty men. Heavily armed. And Homeland Security tactical convoys are staging two miles out on the West Side Highway, waiting for the signal to breach."

"Donovan wants a bloodbath," I said, checking my Kimber's magazine. "He wants Moretti and me to tear each other apart before the feds sweep through and finish whoever's left standing."

"Then we don't fight Moretti," Natalie said, looking at me with fierce determination. "We break his alliance with Donovan right now."

We moved through the shadows of the container yard toward the central warehouse. Through the broken industrial skylights, I saw them: Marco Moretti, an imposing silver-haired mob boss in a tailored cashmere coat, surrounded by dozens of armed soldiers carrying tactical rifles. Standing on an elevated catwalk above them, flanked by four private mercenaries in black tactical gear, was Donovan Pierce.

"...Everything is inside Container 4088, Marco," Donovan was shouting down over the roar of the wind through the shattered roof. "Anti-tank munitions, automatic carbines, and the complete title transfer documents signed by Roman Kinsley himself. Once you confirm the inventory, Roman’s operations are officially yours."

Moretti looked up, his jaw set in suspicion. "Where is Kinsley? He was supposed to deliver the paperwork personally."

"Kinsley got held up by the feds," Donovan lied smoothly, checking his watch. It was 11:48 AM. The federal breach was twelve minutes away. "Sign the manifest, Marco, and let my men open the container."

"Don't touch that lock, Moretti!"

My voice echoed through the vast warehouse like thunder.

Dozens of rifles swung toward the shadows as I stepped out from behind a row of steel crates, hands visible, Kimber holstered at my hip. Behind me, Natalie stepped into the light, holding the encrypted tablet high above her head.

"Roman!" Moretti barked, his bodyguards raising their weapons. "You've got five seconds to explain why I shouldn't turn you into ground meat."

"Because you're standing in a kill box, Marco!" I shouted over the wind. "Look up at the catwalk! Donovan didn't bring you here to hand over my empire! He planted military hardware to trigger a Homeland Security domestic terrorism raid! The feds are two minutes from cutting the perimeter fence!"

Moretti’s eyes flashed with rage, turning his gaze toward the catwalk. "Pierce! Is this true?"

Donovan's smooth facade shattered. His face twisted into a mask of pure malice.

"You're too late, Roman!" Donovan screamed, pulling a tactical detonator from his coat pocket. "The raid is already locked in! Nobody leaves this pier alive!"

Donovan pressed the trigger.

A deafening explosion ripped through the far corner of the warehouse as Container 4088 detonated, sending a massive fireball billowing into the rafters. The shockwave shattered the remaining glass, throwing men across the concrete floor.

Simultaneously, sirens wailed in the distance. Heavy armored BearCats smashed through the outer perimeter gates, sirens howling, tactical searchlights blinding the entire yard.

"Federal agents! Drop your weapons! Drop your weapons and get on the ground!"

Chaos erupted. Moretti’s men panicked, opening fire blindly into the fog toward the advancing federal assault teams. The warehouse turned into a war zone of deafening gunfire, flashbangs, and screaming men.

"Roman, the gantry crane!" Natalie screamed, grabbing my arm through the smoke.

Up on the elevated metal walkway, Donovan was bolting toward the industrial crane connecting Pier 42 to an offshore cargo freighter. He was trying to slip aboard the departing vessel before the federal perimeter closed.

"Calvin, get Moretti’s men into the drainage tunnels under the pier!" I ordered. "Keep them from being slaughtered!"

I turned and sprinted after Donovan, scaling the metal scaffolding two steps at a time, rain lashing against the steel stairs. Behind me, Natalie kept pace, her pistol drawn, covering my blind spots as stray rounds ricocheted off the iron girders.

We reached the top platform sixty feet above the churning ocean.

Donovan was at the edge, hauling himself toward the gangway of the moving freighter. Hearing my boots on the wet grate, he spun around, pulling a snub-nosed revolver.

Bang!

The round grazed my shoulder, tearing through the leather jacket. Before he could fire a second time, Natalie charged forward, tackling Donovan around the waist, slamming him against the rusted safety railing.

The revolver flew from Donovan’s hand, plummeting into the dark sea below.

Donovan snarled, his heavy hands closing around Natalie's throat, slamming her back against the steel beam. "You should have died in that diner, you little bitch!"

I lunged forward, grabbing Donovan by his collar, and smashed my fist into his jaw with all the fury of fifteen years of betrayal. He stumbled backward, blood spraying from his mouth, collapsing against the snapped guard cable.

He hung suspended over the edge, sixty feet above the jagged rocks and the churning black water of the Atlantic.

He looked up at me, his eyes wide with sudden, sickening terror. "Roman... wait. We built this together. Your father... your father loved me like a son!"

"My father knew what you were, Donovan," I said, stepping closer, my voice colder than the ocean wind. "That's why he never gave you the keys to the vault."

Natalie stepped up beside me, rubbing her bruised neck, her eyes burning with pure, unyielding justice.

"This is for Marcus Flores," she whispered.

I released his lapel.

Donovan Pierce fell into the freezing abyss without a scream, swallowed instantly by the roaring Atlantic surf.
