My name is Claire Bennett, and for three years I was married to one of Chicago’s most feared Mafia Bosses.
Vincent Moretti had money, power, and enough influence to make dangerous men hesitate before crossing him.
But none of that mattered when he placed our divorce agreement in front of me.
“You married me because your grandmother wanted to see you settle down before she died,” I said. “Now she’s gone, and Sophia Reynolds is back.”
Vincent said nothing.
That silence told me enough.
I pushed the settlement documents toward him.
“The money isn’t enough.”
His eyes lifted.
“How much do you want?”
“I don’t want your money.”
I met his gaze.
“I want one favor. Someday, when I ask, you owe me.”

Then he nodded.
“Deal.”
I signed.
Three years of marriage ended with one stroke of a pen.
Three days later, everything I wanted from Vincent’s mansion fit into two suitcases.
The housekeeper offered me an expensive coat and unopened gifts.
“Leave them for his next wife,” I said.
At the front gates, Vincent’s car pulled in.
“Where are you going?” he asked.
“Somewhere else.”
He frowned. “I’ll drive you.”
“No.”
Then something inside me finally broke loose.
“Would it have looked better if I pretended not to notice you moved into a hotel after your grandmother died? Or that your mother never thought I was good enough? Or that Sophia came back and suddenly our marriage became disposable?”
His face tightened.
“I was only Sophia’s replacement, wasn’t I?”
Vincent stared at me strangely.
“You think the person you replaced was Sophia?”
I froze.
“What does that mean?”
He looked at me for a long moment.
Then he said quietly, “Forget it.”
And drove away.
The next day, I called my best friend, Madison.
“My flight is still tomorrow?”
“Three in the afternoon,” she confirmed.
Before leaving Chicago, however, I had one final person to see.
Sophia.
We met at an upscale café downtown.
She tried to look sympathetic.
“I heard about the divorce. I’m so sorry.”
I almost laughed.
Instead, I slid a red envelope across the table.
“A wedding gift.”
Her smile vanished when she opened it.
There was no money inside.
Only one document.
Sophia read it.
Then all the color drained from her face.
“How did you get this?”
I stood.
“I’m not here to fight over Vincent. I just wanted you to understand something.”
She stared at me.
“The man you worked so hard to take from me is a man I no longer want.”
Then I walked away.
Later, I learned Sophia went straight to Vincent.
She told him she was leaving.
Then she confessed the secret exposed by the document I had given her.
Whatever she admitted changed everything.
That evening, while I sat alone in my hotel room preparing to leave Chicago forever, Vincent texted me.
“You left your divorce certificate in my car.”
I stared at the message.
Once, our marriage certificate had felt priceless.
Now it meant nothing.
“Throw it away,” I replied.
Seconds later, another message appeared.
“I want to see you. Can I?”
I froze.
The man who had signed our divorce without hesitation suddenly wanted to see me.
I didn’t know what Sophia had confessed.
I didn’t know what Vincent now understood.
But there was still one truth neither of them knew.
My hand slowly moved to my stomach.
