Chapter 6 - ETHAN’S SECRET

I found Ethan on the roof of the emergency operations building.

“You knew my father.”

He didn't deny it.

“Yes.”

“How?”

“He hired me privately three years ago.”

The betrayal stung more than it should have.

“You could have told me.”

“I wanted to.”

“That's not an answer.”

Ethan looked across the city.

“Your father suspected someone was compromising Whitmore projects. He asked my firm to perform independent structural audits.”

“Northstar?”

“Among others.”

“Why was none of this reported?”

“Because Robert died before we finished.”

“And afterward?”

“Gregory canceled the contract.”

Of course.

I folded my arms.

“What did Gregory mean about my trust?”

“I don't know.”

“Don't lie to me.”

“I’m not.”

I studied his face.

“Then what are you hiding?”

Ethan exhaled.

“Your father contacted me the night before he died.”

My pulse quickened.

“He said if anything happened to him, I should protect the audit records until you were ready.”

“Ready for what?”

“He never explained.”

“Why didn't you contact me?”

“Because you were married to Daniel.”

That hurt because it made sense.

Ethan retrieved an old phone from his bag.

“I kept one voicemail.”

Dad's voice played.

Ethan, if Claire ever comes asking, tell her I wasn't trying to take the company away from her. I was trying to make sure nobody could take her choices away. She'll understand eventually.

My eyes burned.

That sounded like Dad.

Not conspiratorial.

Protective.

The trust wasn't about controlling me.

It was about preventing Daniel or anyone else from controlling what Dad left me.

That afternoon, investigators executed search warrants at Whitmore headquarters.

Gregory disappeared.

Daniel didn't.

He held a press conference.

He stood outside the company building and told reporters he loved his wife, regretted the helicopter decision, and believed I was being manipulated by people exploiting my trauma.

He never mentioned Vanessa.

He never mentioned the money.

He certainly never mentioned the steel.

Then reporters found me.

“Mrs. Whitmore, do you believe your husband caused the hotel collapse?”

“No,” I said.

Cameras leaned closer.

“I believe evidence should decide that, not anger.”

“Did he knowingly approve substandard materials?”

“That is being investigated.”

“Are you seeking revenge?”

“No.”

That answer surprised even me.

Three days earlier, revenge had been all I wanted.

Now I wanted something harder.

Truth.

That night, Daniel came to my apartment.

Security tried to stop him.

I allowed him upstairs.

He looked exhausted.

“Gregory is gone.”

“I heard.”

“He emptied an account and disappeared.”

“Did you help him?”

“No.”

“Why should I believe you?”

Daniel sank into a chair.

“Because Gregory has been using me too.”

I almost laughed.

Daniel pulled an envelope from his jacket.

Inside were photographs.

My father meeting Gregory.

My father arguing with Daniel.

Then a photograph of Dad's car on the morning he died.

“What's this?”

“Look at the passenger.”

I enlarged the image.

Gregory.

“You told everyone Dad drove to work alone.”

“I thought he did.”

“Where did you get this?”

“Vanessa.”

My stomach tightened.

“She gave you copies?”

“No. I found them in her apartment after the earthquake.”

Daniel looked genuinely frightened.

“Claire, Gregory has something on all of us.”

“Including you?”

“Yes.”

“What?”

His silence answered.

“Say it.”

“I approved Northstar.”

“I know.”

“I knew the material certifications were questionable.”

That confession landed harder than expected.

“You knew?”

“I thought the components were still safe. Gregory said the certification problem was paperwork.”

“And you believed him because?”

“Because switching suppliers saved twelve million dollars.”

I stared at the man I'd married.

“Twelve million.”

“I was trying to keep the company solvent.”

“No. You were trying to improve margins.”

“Claire—”

“People died.”

His eyes dropped.

For once, he had no defense.

Then his phone buzzed.

He looked at the screen and went pale.

“What?”

Daniel turned it toward me.

A message from Gregory.

Midnight. Pier 17. Bring Robert’s drive or I release everything.

Attached was a photograph taken seconds earlier.

Vanessa sat tied to a chair.

May you like

Behind her stood Gregory.

And beside Vanessa was Luis Ortega.
