Chapter 10 - The Right Car

Six months later.

The golden light of an early autumn afternoon spilled across the manicured lawn of the newly opened Elena Méndez Community Cardiac Center. Hundreds of people filled the courtyard—nurses in brightly colored scrubs, neighborhood families, elderly patients holding balloons, and local physicians who had finally found a home that valued care over billing codes.

Inside the glass atrium, a large brass plaque hung proudly near the entrance:

“Dedicated to the belief that every heartbeat matters, and no human being is invisible.”

Isabela stood by the reception desk, wearing a tailored navy pantsuit, her hair falling in soft, elegant curls over her shoulders. Beside her, sitting proudly in a wheelchair pushed by an attendant, was her mother, Elena—healthy, smiling, her face radiant with a pride that words could never capture.

"You did this, mija," Elena whispered in Spanish, squeezing Isabela’s hand tightly. "You did all of this."

"We did this, Mama," Isabela replied, kissing her mother’s forehead.

As the ribbon-cutting ceremony concluded and the crowd began to disperse into the reception hall for food and music, Isabela stepped out onto the quiet front drive. Her phone buzzed in her purse—a reminder for an evening consult. She stretched her arms, a familiar wave of gentle tiredness washing over her.

She walked down the stone steps toward the parking bay.

A sleek, midnight-black Maybach was parked quietly by the curb, its tinted windows gleaming in the autumn sun.

Isabela paused, a playful smile curving her lips.

She walked up to the rear door, pulled the polished chrome handle, and climbed into the plush leather interior. She sank into the buttery seat, let out a long, theatrical sigh, closed her eyes, and leaned her head against the headrest.

For a moment, there was only the quiet hum of the engine.

Then, a rich, familiar voice spoke from beside her:

"Wrong car, Doctor."

Isabela opened her eyes, turning to look at Mateo Vance.

He looked breathtaking. He was dressed in a dark, perfectly fitted suit, his open-collared white shirt casual yet impeccably sharp. But the cold corporate distance that had once lived in his hazel eyes was completely gone, replaced by a warmth that set her heart racing every single time.

Isabela leaned back, crossing her legs with a slow, confident smile. "Is it? Because I’m pretty sure this ride belongs to me."

"Is that so?" Mateo chuckled, leaning closer to her. He reached out, his thumb gently tracing the line of her jaw. "And where is it you think you’re going?"

"Anywhere," she murmured, leaning into his touch. "As long as you’re driving."

Mateo looked at her with an intensity that took her breath away. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box, resting it gently in the palm of her hand.

Isabela froze, her breath catching in her throat.

"I spent my whole life trying to control everything," Mateo said softly, his voice full of an emotion so raw and true it brought tears to her eyes. "Until you fell asleep in my backseat and showed me that the best things in this life are the ones we never see coming. I don't want an empire without you, Isabela. Will you share the road with me?"

Isabela looked down at the ring, sparkling brilliantly in the sunlight, and then back up into the eyes of the man who had torn down his own walls just to stand beside her.

She smiled through her tears, throwing her arms around his neck and pulling him into a passionate kiss.

"Yes," she whispered against his lips. "A thousand times, yes."

Outside, the chauffeur smiled into the rearview mirror, put the car in drive, and smoothly pulled into the golden sunset.

She had gotten into the wrong car that rainy night.

And it had taken her to the exact place she was always meant to be.
