Chapter 7 - THE FINAL FILE

Miguel survived.
Barely.
The FBI arrived before dawn.
For the first time, Maya saw the mansion surrounded by federal vehicles.
Ethan was gone.
But the evidence was everywhere.
Bank accounts.
Encrypted files.
Surveillance footage.
Helix documents.
Yet the most important file was still missing.
Maya thought about her father's words.
The one thing you'd never abandon.
She returned to her childhood home.
The house had been sold years earlier.
But the new owner allowed her inside.
Maya walked through the old hallway.
Her childhood bedroom was almost unchanged.
She opened the closet.
Nothing.
The attic.
Nothing.
Then she saw a faded stuffed bear.
She smiled.
“Parker.”
Her father had given it to her when she was six.
She had carried it everywhere.
She picked it up.
Something rattled inside.
Maya froze.
She cut open the seam.
A tiny metal capsule fell into her hand.
Inside was a microchip.
Richard stared.
“That must be it.”
But the chip contained no readable data.
They needed the pendant.
Maya suddenly understood.
“The pendant isn't the key.”
Richard looked at her.
“It is the password.”
They contacted federal investigators.
Within hours, technicians decrypted the chip.
The final file opened.
And the truth was worse than they expected.
Helix wasn't merely a medical project.
Ethan had planned to use neural technology to manipulate patients' motor responses.
The goal was control.
A person could appear paralyzed.
Or move without conscious control.
Maya felt sick.
Richard looked at his own wheelchair.
“That explains why they wanted me declared permanently disabled.”
“They wanted to test it on you.”
Richard nodded.
“My accident wasn't just an attempt to kill me.”
“It was a demonstration.”
Ethan had deliberately injured Richard, then used experimental technology to suppress his movements.
Richard had slowly regained control through months of therapy.
He pretended nothing had changed because he knew Ethan would finish the job if he discovered the truth.
But there was another file.
A personnel list.
Maya's eyes stopped.
One name stood out.
Dr. Eleanor Vance.
Richard's mother.
She had been involved from the beginning.
Richard stared at the screen.
“No.”
Maya looked at him.
“Your mother knew.”
He shook his head.
“She wouldn't.”
Eleanor entered the room.
She looked exhausted.
“Richard.”
He turned.
“Tell me it's not true.”
Eleanor's eyes filled with tears.
“I never wanted this.”
Richard's voice cracked.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Since before your accident.”
Richard stepped backward.
“You let me believe Ethan did everything.”
“I was afraid.”
“You were afraid?”
She cried.
“Ethan threatened you. He threatened everyone.”
Richard's anger softened for one second.
“Mother…”
“I tried to stop him.”
“How?”
“I sabotaged the project.”
Eleanor revealed that she had secretly helped Richard's attorney collect evidence.
The attorney's death had forced her into silence.
She had arranged for the nurse to contact Richard.
She had even helped fake her own disappearance to escape Ethan.
Richard stared at her.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I didn't know who I could trust.”
Maya suddenly remembered her father's recording.
The person you trust most may be the person who betrayed you.
It hadn't been Richard.
It had been Eleanor.
But not because she was the enemy.
Because she had been hiding the truth.
Then the lights went out.
A voice echoed through the building.
“You really should have listened to me.”
Ethan.
May you like
He had returned.
And he wasn't alone.
