Chapter 7 - THE BETRAYAL

The bullet missed Dante by inches.

He moved faster.

He slammed Gabriel into the wall.

Celia pulled me behind a pillar.

The station erupted into chaos.

Gabriel fought like a man who had nothing left to lose.

Dante finally disarmed him.

“You worked for her.”

Gabriel laughed.

“Since before you could walk.”

Dante's face went pale.

“You killed my father?”

“No.”

“My mother?”

“No.”

“Eleanor's mother?”

Gabriel hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

Dante hit him.

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

The word destroyed the room.

I stepped forward.

“My mother?”

Gabriel looked at me.

“She wasn't supposed to survive.”

My chest tightened.

“Why?”

“Because she found the accounts.”

“And my father?”

“He knew too much.”

I could barely breathe.

Dante grabbed Gabriel by the collar.

“You killed innocent people.”

Gabriel looked at him.

“I protected this family.”

“You destroyed it.”

“No.”

Gabriel smiled bitterly.

“I kept it alive.”

Then he revealed the final secret.

Dante's grandmother hadn't been the real architect.

She had been protecting someone.

Someone who still controlled the network.

Someone Dante knew.

His mother.

I stared at him.

Dante's mother had died when he was twelve.

Gabriel explained that she had secretly inherited control after the grandmother's death.

But she had refused to continue.

She had tried to dismantle the organization.

That's why Dante's father was killed.

That's why my mother disappeared.

That's why Gabriel had been watching Dante.

He wasn't trying to take control.

He was trying to force Dante into becoming the man his family needed.

A ruthless successor.

Dante looked devastated.

“So everything?”

Gabriel nodded.

“Your entire life was engineered.”

Dante stepped away.

For the first time, he looked lost.

I reached for him.

He didn't move.

I touched his hand.

He looked at me.

“I don't know who I am without this.”

“You're Dante.”

“That isn't enough.”

“It is for me.”

His eyes filled with something I'd never seen before.

Fear.

Not of death.

Of becoming his father.

We left Gabriel alive.

Not because Dante forgave him.

Because Dante wanted him to testify.

He wanted the organization dismantled legally.

That decision changed everything.

For the first time, Dante chose not to become what his family expected.

Weeks passed.

Dante began cooperating with federal investigators.

His businesses were audited.

Some properties were seized.

The headlines were brutal.

MAFIA HEIR TURNS AGAINST FAMILY NETWORK.

POWERFUL BUSINESSMAN FACES INVESTIGATION.

I moved back into my apartment.

Dante didn't ask me to stay.

That mattered.

He gave me a choice.

One rainy evening, I found him outside my building.

No guards.

No suit.

Just jeans, a dark coat, and tired eyes.

“You came alone,” I said.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I wanted to ask you something.”

“What?”

He looked nervous.

Dante Russo looked nervous.

“I don't know what happens next.”

“Neither do I.”

“I don't want to own your life.”

I smiled.

“Good.”

“I don't want to protect you by controlling you.”

“Better.”

“And I don't want you because you saved me.”

My heart beat faster.

“I want you because when everything I knew collapsed, you were the first person who looked at me and didn't see a monster.”

I stepped closer.

“Dante…”

He stopped.

“Can I kiss you?”

I smiled.

“Yes.”

He kissed me gently.

No power.

No possession.

Just warmth.

For the first time, the feared man of East Harbor looked completely human.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A woman's voice whispered:

“Your father lied about one thing.”

My smile disappeared.

“What?”

May you like

“He didn't die naturally.”

The call ended.
