Chapter 8 - THE HOUSE THAT BURNED

The house at 3103 Lake Shore Drive had never truly disappeared.

Its original structure burned.

The land remained.

Beneath it was a basement.

Adriano and Mara found the entrance behind a newer storage building.

“You’re staying in the car.”

Mara stared at him.

“We’ve had this conversation.”

“I keep hoping you’ll become reasonable.”

“I keep hoping you’ll become less annoying.”

Neither happened.

They descended together.

The underground room smelled of dust.

Inside were boxes.

Hundreds.

Records from Alessandro’s original organization.

Adriano opened one.

His childhood photographs.

Another contained financial ledgers.

Then Mara found Daniel’s handwriting.

“Adriano.”

A notebook.

Daniel had been there.

The final pages documented Alessandro’s network.

But the last entry was personal.

If Adriano ever reads this, tell him his father’s greatest weapon is shame. He’ll make Adriano believe blood determines character. It doesn’t. Choices do.

Adriano read it twice.

Mara touched his arm.

“Daniel knew you pretty well.”

“Better than I knew him.”

A noise sounded upstairs.

They froze.

Adriano drew his weapon.

Footsteps descended.

Alessandro appeared.

Alone.

“You found it.”

Adriano raised the gun.

Alessandro smiled.

“You won’t shoot me.”

“No?”

“You still want to be different from me.”

Adriano slowly lowered the weapon.

“You’re right.”

Alessandro smiled wider.

Then police lights flashed outside.

His smile vanished.

Mara held up her phone.

“I called them twenty minutes ago.”

Alessandro stared at her.

“You.”

“Yes, me.”

“You think courts can contain men like us?”

Mara shook her head.

“There is no ‘us.’”

Federal agents entered.

Alessandro was arrested.

He looked at Adriano.

“You’ll regret this.”

Adriano answered calmly.

“I’ve regretted becoming like you far more.”

They took him away.

It should have ended there.

Instead, Adriano disappeared the following morning.

Mara found a letter.

I need to dismantle what remains. You and Luca deserve a life that doesn’t require armed guards.

Mara became furious.

Not heartbroken.

Furious.

She called him seventeen times.

No answer.

On call eighteen, he answered.

“What?”

Adriano sounded surprised.

“I expected crying.”

“You absolute idiot.”

“Mara—”

“You don’t get to decide what Luca and I deserve.”

Silence.

“You don’t get to disappear because you think sacrifice makes you noble.”

“I’m trying to protect you.”

“No. You’re doing exactly what Daniel did.”

That hit him.

“Come home.”

“I can’t.”

“Wrong answer.”

“Mara.”

“I love you.”

Silence.

She had not planned to say it.

Neither had he expected it.

Mara closed her eyes.

“Well. That was inconvenient.”

Adriano breathed out.

“Say it again.”

“No.”

“Mara.”

“You heard me.”

“I need confirmation.”

“You’re impossible.”

“I love you too.”

Her anger cracked.

“Then come home.”

“I have one thing left to do.”

“What?”

“Make sure my father’s empire dies with him.”

Adriano spent the next month dismantling illegal operations connected to his family.

He turned over records.

Closed shell companies.

Placed legitimate assets under independent management.

Victims received restitution funds.

Employees who had nothing to do with the criminal operations kept their jobs.

And one rainy Tuesday morning, Adriano finally came home.

Luca reached him first.

Mara remained at the doorway.

Adriano hugged the boy.

Then looked at her.

“No more pretending?”

Mara folded her arms.

“That depends.”

“On?”

“Whether you’re still annoying.”

“I am.”

“Then we have a problem.”

He crossed the room.

“What if I promise to improve?”

“You won’t.”

“Probably not.”

She kissed him anyway.

Luca groaned.

“Again?”

For the first time in years, Adriano’s house filled with laughter.

But the story was not finished.

Because two months later, Mara received a letter.

It had been written eighteen months earlier.

By Daniel.

And across the front were four words:

FOR MARA’S WEDDING DAY ONLY.
