Chapter 9 - The Last Secret in Carlo's Final Recording

Gabriel flew to Boston before sunrise.
Sophie went with him.
They found Thomas at an abandoned theater.
He was waiting.
But he wasn't alone.
A federal agent stood beside him.
Thomas raised his hands.
"I surrender."
Gabriel stared.
"Why?"
"Because the truth is bigger than me."
Thomas handed over a final envelope.
Inside was Carlo's original death report.
The real one.
It contained the name of the doctor who had administered the fatal drug.
Sophie recognized it.
Dr. Harris.
The same doctor who had been treating Elena.
Gabriel's face went cold.
"He's still alive."
Thomas nodded.
"He has been working for me for years."
Sophie whispered:
"Then he poisoned Elena."
"No," Thomas said.
"Elena was already dying."
"What?"
"She wasn't poisoned."
Thomas looked at Gabriel.
"She was slowly being starved and overmedicated."
Gabriel closed his eyes.
Then Thomas revealed the final truth.
Carlo's death had not been planned originally.
He had discovered the scheme and confronted Thomas.
Thomas panicked.
He injected Carlo.
But someone else had been in the room.
Someone who had watched.
Someone who could have stopped it.
Adrian.
Gabriel stared.
Thomas nodded.
"Adrian could have saved him."
"Why didn't he?"
"Because he was afraid."
Gabriel looked away.
For years he had believed loyalty meant never abandoning family.
Now he understood that fear could destroy people too.
But Thomas wasn't finished.
"The worst part?"
Gabriel stared.
"Your father knew you would become exactly like him."
"What does that mean?"
"He wanted you to walk away from the empire."
Thomas handed him another letter.
Gabriel opened it.
Carlo's handwriting.
My son,
Power is useful only when you can put it down.
If I die, don't become me.
Gabriel's eyes filled with tears.
He folded the letter.
Then he turned toward Thomas.
"You took four years from my family."
Thomas said nothing.
"You took my father."
Silence.
"You took my wife."
Thomas looked down.
"And you almost took my mother."
Gabriel stepped closer.
"But you didn't take me."
Thomas looked up.
"Why not?"
Gabriel answered:
"Because I chose differently."
Federal agents took Thomas away.
The DeLuca empire collapsed over the next several months.
Illegal businesses were dismantled.
Shell companies were exposed.
Corrupt officials resigned.
Vincent pleaded guilty to financial crimes and accepted a reduced sentence after cooperating.
Adrian testified.
Isabella took control of the legitimate family foundations.
Elena recovered slowly.
And Gabriel did something nobody expected.
He sold most of the businesses.
He kept only the hotels and shipping companies that could operate legally.
The money from the sales funded a foundation in Carlo and Clara's names.
Sophie finished paying Lucy's tuition.
But she didn't leave the estate.
Instead, she became Elena's full-time companion.
Not a maid.
Family.
One evening, Gabriel found Sophie in the garden.
"You changed your hair."
She touched it.
"Lucy convinced me."
"You look beautiful."
Sophie smiled.
"You're getting better at compliments."
"I'm practicing."
He sat beside her.
"Mom wants to have dinner outside tomorrow."
"She does?"
"She says she wants to watch the sunset."
Sophie smiled.
"She can't see it."
Gabriel looked at her.
"She says she can feel it."
Sophie reached for his hand.
They sat silently.
Then Gabriel said:
"I have something for you."
He gave her a small envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
It showed Clara, Elena, Carlo, and a baby.
On the back was written:
One day, she will come home.
Sophie cried.
Gabriel wrapped an arm around her.
"I think she did."
Sophie looked at him.
"What?"
"She came home."
Their foreheads touched.
Then Gabriel whispered:
"I love you."
Sophie stared.
She hadn't expected it.
"Gabriel..."
"I know."
He smiled.
"You don't have to say it back."
Sophie touched his face.
"I love you too."
They kissed.
For the first time, there was no fear.
No secrets.
No recordings.
No locked doors.
Just two people who had survived a family built on lies.
But upstairs, Elena opened her eyes.
She was holding the final photograph.
May you like
And she whispered:
"Finally."
