Chapter 19 - The Man Who Finally Asked for HelpAdam wanted to go alone.

Every instinct demanded it.

Hope was his daughter.

Victor wanted him.

Give him the ledger.

Take Hope.

End it.

Then Adam remembered every disaster in his life had begun with the same assumption:

I can handle this myself.

So he called Rebecca.

Then Nora.

Then Caleb.

Within thirty minutes, federal agents filled Caleb's conference room.

Nora stood beside Adam.

Her face was white.

But her voice was steady.

“What exactly did Victor say?”

Adam showed Rebecca the message.

She examined the photograph.

Caleb zoomed in.

“Wait.”

“What?” Adam asked.

“The window.”

Behind Hope's car seat was a blurred sign.

Caleb enhanced it.

LAKE—

Adam's stomach dropped.

“Lake Geneva.”

Daniel's car had been found there.

Rebecca mobilized teams.

Then another message arrived.

OLD MERIDIAN BOATHOUSE.

ONE HOUR.

NO POLICE.

Nora grabbed Adam's arm.

“You aren't going alone.”

“He'll hurt Hope.”

“And he'll hurt you.”

“I don't matter.”

Nora slapped him.

The room froze.

Adam stared.

Nora's eyes filled with furious tears.

“Don't ever say that to me again.”

“Nora—”

“You don't get to spend two years learning that people matter and then decide your life becomes disposable when you're scared.”

Adam couldn't speak.

Nora lowered her voice.

“Hope needs her father.”

His eyes filled.

“And I…”

She stopped.

Adam waited.

Nora swallowed.

“I am still furious with you.”

He almost laughed through tears.

“I know.”

“But I love you.”

Everything inside him broke.

Nora continued.

“I don't know what forgiveness looks like yet.”

“You don't have to.”

“But you are not dying today because you think sacrifice is easier than living with consequences.”

Adam nodded.

Rebecca developed the plan.

Adam would go.

Wired.

Tracked.

Agents would remain outside Victor's expected surveillance perimeter.

Nora stayed in the command vehicle.

Caleb drove Adam halfway.

At the final checkpoint, Caleb stopped.

“You scared?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

Adam looked at him.

“That's terrible encouragement.”

“Fear means you understand what's valuable.”

Adam glanced toward the road.

“My daughter.”

Caleb nodded.

“And?”

Adam thought of Nora.

“My wife.”

“Then come back to both.”

Adam entered the abandoned boathouse at 8:17 p.m.

Victor stood near the water.

Hope was in a portable crib.

Awake.

Crying.

“Da!”

Adam's entire body reacted.

“Hey, baby.”

He forced himself not to run toward her.

Victor smiled.

“Fatherhood suits you.”

“Let her go.”

“The ledger.”

Adam held up a metal case.

“First Hope.”

Victor laughed.

“You're negotiating.”

“No.”

Adam set the case down.

“I'm asking.”

Victor studied him.

“Richard was right about you.”

“What did Richard say?”

“That underneath all that ambition, you were sentimental.”

Adam glanced at Hope.

“Apparently.”

Victor stepped closer.

“You could have been extraordinary.”

“I was rich.”

“You were powerful.”

“I was lonely.”

Victor's smile faded.

Adam continued.

“Richard died professionally because he thought consequences were things that happened to weaker men.”

“Hale was careless.”

“So are you.”

Victor's eyes narrowed.

Adam heard Rebecca's voice faintly through the hidden earpiece.

Keep him talking.

Adam asked, “Did you kill Daniel?”

Victor smiled.

“Daniel killed himself.”

Adam's jaw tightened.

“Interesting.”

“What?”

“Rebecca never said Daniel was dead.”

Victor realized.

Too late.

His face changed.

Adam continued.

“You just did.”

Victor reached inside his jacket.

Adam moved.

A gun appeared.

Nora heard everything from the command van.

“Move!”

Agents rushed.

Inside, Victor grabbed Adam and pressed the weapon against his ribs.

Hope screamed.

Adam froze.

Victor dragged him toward the dock.

“You should have stayed greedy.”

Adam looked at Hope.

“No.”

Victor pushed him.

Adam stumbled.

Then a voice came from behind.

“Victor.”

Sophie.

She stood in the doorway.

Everyone froze.

Victor stared.

Sophie held her father's journal.

“You wanted this too.”

“Sophie, leave!” Adam shouted.

Victor shifted the gun.

That was the opening.

Adam struck his wrist.

The gun fired.

Nora screamed through the radio.

Agents flooded the building.

Victor fell.

Adam hit the floor.

For one second nobody knew who had been shot.

Then Adam stood.

Blood on his sleeve.

Not his.

Victor had been struck in the shoulder.

Agents restrained him.

Adam ran to Hope.

He lifted her.

She screamed against his chest.

“Daddy's here.”

His voice shattered.

“Daddy's here.”

Nora entered seconds later despite every order telling her to remain outside.

She saw Adam.

Hope.

Alive.

She ran.

The three of them collapsed together.

Nora kissed Hope's face.

Then Adam's.

Then Hope again.

Adam was crying too hard to speak.

Behind them, Victor was carried away.

Sophie stood silently near the door.

Rebecca approached her.

“You weren't supposed to be here.”

“I know.”

Adam looked over.

“Why?”

Sophie stared at Victor.

“Because I wanted him to see Daniel Voss's daughter survive him.”

Later, after Hope was examined and declared unharmed, Adam sat in an ambulance.

Nora beside him.

Their daughter asleep against his chest.

Adam whispered:

“I almost went alone.”

“I know.”

“I almost didn't call anyone.”

“I know.”

He looked at her.

“But you did,” Nora said.

Adam nodded.

Nora touched his wedding ring.

Maybe change wasn't becoming someone who never felt old instincts.

Maybe it was recognizing them before they became choices.

She rested her head against his shoulder.

“Come home.”

Adam looked at her.

“To the guest room?”

Nora smiled faintly.

“For tonight.”

May you like

He laughed.

It was enough.
