Chapter 2 - The Name They Erased

Adrian didn't sleep that night.

He sat in his study with the lights off, staring at the rain sliding down the windows.

Daniel Keane.

The name wouldn't leave his mind.

At two in the morning, Adrian opened an old family archive on his computer.

Whitmore Infrastructure kept decades of records.

Contracts.

Partnerships.

Legal disputes.

Acquisitions.

Personnel files.

He searched Daniel Keane.

Nothing.

He tried variations.

Still nothing.

That was impossible.

Adrian remembered the family dinner.

He remembered his father's face.

He remembered his grandfather's old study.

And most importantly, he remembered something else.

A photograph.

He had seen it once as a teenager.

A young man standing beside his grandfather outside the company's first construction yard.

Adrian had asked who he was.

His grandfather had smiled sadly.

"Someone who saved this company."

Adrian had never been given a name.

The next morning, he called Walter Hale.

Walter answered immediately.

"Adrian?"

"I need to ask you something."

A pause.

"About what?"

"Daniel Keane."

Silence.

Not surprise.

Fear.

Adrian noticed it immediately.

"How do you know that name?"

Walter exhaled.

"Where did you hear it?"

"That's my question."

Another silence.

Finally Walter said, "You shouldn't involve yourself in this."

"Why?"

"Because some things are better left buried."

Adrian stood.

"Four years ago, my family stopped mentioning a man who apparently worked with my grandfather. Now that man's widow works in my house, and you showed up at her apartment with a warning about an inheritance."

Walter said nothing.

Adrian's voice hardened.

"What happened?"

"I can't discuss it."

"You're my family's attorney."

"Exactly."

"Then you're obligated to tell me."

"No, Adrian."

Walter's tone was unusually firm.

"I'm obligated to protect the Whitmore family."

The call ended.

Adrian stared at the phone.

For the first time in years, he felt like an outsider in his own family.

Later that morning, Marissa arrived for work.

She behaved normally.

She cleaned the breakfast room.

Folded laundry.

Prepared the guest bedrooms.

Adrian watched her from a distance.

He wanted to ask about Daniel.

But he couldn't.

Not yet.

Around noon, he found her standing in the nursery.

Owen was asleep in the small crib Adrian had never noticed before.

Marissa smiled at the baby.

Then she noticed Adrian.

"Mr. Whitmore."

"How is he?"

"Sleeping."

Adrian nodded.

He glanced at the diaper bag.

"You don't have to worry about working late today."

She looked surprised.

"I wasn't planning to."

"Good."

He almost mentioned the formula.

Instead he said, "If you ever need flexibility because of Owen, tell me."

Marissa gave him a cautious smile.

"Thank you."

Then she returned to work.

Adrian realized something.

Marissa wasn't asking for help.

She was fighting desperately to remain independent.

He respected that.

That afternoon, Adrian secretly arranged for the estate's purchasing manager to order several months of baby supplies and deliver them to Marissa anonymously.

But before the order could be placed, Adrian received a phone call.

It was from his younger sister, Caroline.

"You've been asking about Daniel Keane."

Adrian froze.

"Who told you?"

"Dad."

"What did he say?"

Caroline hesitated.

"Adrian, please stop digging."

"Why?"

"Because Daniel wasn't just an employee."

Adrian waited.

"He was Dad's best friend."

His stomach tightened.

"What happened between them?"

"I don't know everything."

"You know something."

Caroline sighed.

"Daniel accused Dad of stealing money from the company."

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"How much?"

"Millions."

"Was it true?"

"I don't know."

"Then why was Daniel erased?"

Caroline lowered her voice.

"Because he disappeared."

"Disappeared?"

"Four years ago. The police found his car near the harbor."

Adrian felt cold.

"Was his body ever found?"

"No."

The room seemed suddenly silent.

Adrian looked through the window.

Across the lawn, Marissa was carrying a basket of folded towels.

A woman whose husband had supposedly disappeared.

A woman raising his child alone.

A woman carrying a blue envelope that terrified Adrian's family's attorney.

"What does the envelope contain?" Adrian asked.

Caroline said, "I don't know."

"You're lying."

"I'm trying to protect you."

"From what?"

She didn't answer.

Then she whispered:

"From Dad."

The call ended.

That evening, Adrian opened his grandfather's old desk.

He had inherited it after the old man's death.

Inside were dozens of documents.

Most were ordinary.

Then Adrian found a photograph.

Three men stood together at a construction site.

His grandfather.

His father.

And Daniel Keane.

On the back, someone had written:

The three men who built the Whitmore future.

Adrian stared at Daniel's face.

Then he noticed something.

Daniel was wearing a small silver watch.

Adrian recognized it.

Marissa had worn the matching watch chain around her neck several times.

His grandfather's watch.

Why would Daniel have it?

And why would Marissa possess something belonging to Adrian's grandfather?

Adrian turned the photograph over again.

A second sentence had been written beneath the first.

If Daniel ever comes to you, listen before you trust your father.

Adrian's heart pounded.

His grandfather had apparently known something.

Something terrible.

May you like

And he had left a warning.

But why?
