Chapter 8 - THE GOOD MAN’S LIE

Tessa laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because the alternative was breaking.

“My father?”

Evelyn nodded.

“No.”

“Tessa—”

“No.”

Leo remained silent.

That mattered.

Old Leo would have interrogated Evelyn.

This Leo let Tessa control the moment.

“My father spent twenty-two years mourning you.”

“I know.”

“He raised me.”

“I know.”

“He worked two jobs.”

“I know.”

“He cried on your birthday.”

Evelyn’s face crumpled.

“I know.”

“Then explain.”

Daniel Jenkins had not been part of Antonio’s criminal organization.

He had been federal law enforcement.

Undercover.

The revelation made Tessa sit down.

“He was investigating the Santoros?”

“Yes.”

“And you?”

“I became an informant.”

The story unfolded painfully.

Daniel and Evelyn fell in love during the investigation.

But Daniel’s superiors wanted Evelyn inside.

Closer.

Longer.

They pressured her to continue gathering evidence even after Antonio suspected her.

The night of the supposed accident, Daniel had arranged Evelyn’s disappearance.

But afterward, something changed.

“He wanted the case more than he wanted me safe.”

Evelyn’s voice trembled.

“He kept sending me back.”

Tessa felt sick.

“Dad?”

“He believed Antonio’s network would survive unless we destroyed everything.”

“And did it?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because someone inside the government was protecting Antonio.”

Leo finally spoke.

“Who?”

“I never discovered it.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“But Daniel did.”

Tessa stood.

“My father knew?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

“He refused to tell me.”

“Why?”

“Because by then he no longer trusted me.”

The tragedy was not simple.

That made it worse.

Daniel had loved Evelyn.

Evelyn had loved Daniel.

But fear, secrecy, and duty had rotted something between them.

Eventually, Evelyn vanished from both the Santoros and Daniel.

She spent decades collecting evidence.

“Why not come back after Antonio died?”

“Because the network didn’t die with him.”

Evelyn handed Leo a file.

Companies.

Judges.

Politicians.

Police officers.

Names across several states.

Leo stared.

“My organization touches half of these.”

“I know.”

“You’ve been investigating me.”

“For twenty years.”

Leo almost looked impressed.

Tessa groaned.

“Could everybody please stop investigating everybody?”

Evelyn blinked.

Leo said:

“I’ve made similar requests.”

“You investigated my date.”

“Bad example.”

Despite everything, Tessa laughed.

Even Evelyn smiled.

That tiny moment saved them from drowning.

They returned to the estate together.

Daniel arrived the next afternoon under security.

When he saw Evelyn, the old man stopped.

Twenty-two years vanished from his face.

“Evie.”

Evelyn cried.

Daniel cried.

Tessa hated both of them.

Loved both of them.

And understood neither.

They spoke privately for two hours.

When Daniel emerged, he looked older.

He handed Tessa an envelope.

“I owe you the truth.”

Inside was a name.

Nathaniel Vale.

Leo recognized it.

“Federal judge.”

Daniel nodded.

“Former federal prosecutor. He protected Antonio.”

“Why?”

“Money initially. Then power.”

Evelyn added:

“He built a network from Antonio’s operations.”

Leo looked at the files.

“Saint Aurelia.”

“Yes.”

Daniel nodded.

“Antonio was never the top.”

Tessa felt cold.

“He was working for Vale?”

“Eventually.”

The mafia boss she had feared was suddenly only one branch of something much larger.

Then Leo asked:

“Why target Tessa now?”

Daniel looked at him.

“Because of you.”

Leo’s face hardened.

“Explain.”

“Vale knows Evelyn kept evidence. He never found it. But once you became interested in Tessa, he assumed she knew where it was.”

Tessa stared.

“So Leo watching me put me in danger.”

“Yes.”

Leo looked devastated.

Daniel continued.

“But it also kept you alive.”

Tessa frowned.

“How?”

“Vale could have killed you months ago.”

“Why didn’t he?”

“Because he believed Leo might lead him to Evelyn.”

Silence.

Tessa’s relationship had become bait before it had even become a relationship.

Leo stood.

“I’m ending this.”

Tessa looked at him.

“What?”

“You leave tonight.”

Her expression changed.

“Careful.”

Leo’s voice cracked.

“I made you a target.”

“Careful.”

“I can put you somewhere Vale cannot—”

“Leo.”

He stopped.

Tessa walked toward him.

“You are doing it again.”

His breathing slowed.

“Deciding.”

“Yes.”

“I don’t know how to keep you safe.”

“Then ask me what I want.”

He closed his eyes.

Opened them.

“What do you want?”

Tessa took his hand.

“To stay.”

“Tessa—”

“Do not make me regret complimenting your progress.”

His mouth tightened.

Then:

“Okay.”

That night, someone sent Leo a video.

Security footage.

Daniel’s care facility.

A man walked into Daniel’s old room, placed a black box on the bed, and looked directly at the camera.

Nathaniel Vale.

He smiled.

Then held up a card.

MIDNIGHT. COME ALONE, LEO.

Beneath it:

OR I RELEASE THE NAME OF YOUR REAL FATHER.

Leo stared at the screen.

Tessa saw something she had never seen before.

Recognition.

“You know who your father is.”

May you like

Leo did not answer.

That was answer enough.
