Chapter 7 - The Little Girl with Vincent's Eyes

Margaret Ellis was found in a quiet Wisconsin town, living in a modest house near a small lake.

She opened the door only after investigators showed their identification.

When they mentioned Elena and Grace, her face changed.

“You found them?”

“Not yet,” the lead investigator replied. “But we believe you can help us locate them.”

Margaret sat down slowly.

“I've waited four years for someone to ask the right questions.”

She explained that Elena had arrived at the clinic frightened, exhausted, and heavily pregnant. Richard's people had convinced her that Vincent had rejected her and intended to take the child.

Margaret had initially believed the documents.

Then she met Elena.

“She never spoke like a woman who wanted to abandon her husband,” Margaret said. “She spoke like a woman who was desperate to reach him.”

After Grace was born, Daniel Bennett had appeared with a message from Elena's few remaining allies. He was supposed to help them travel to a safe location.

But Richard's men intercepted the plan.

Daniel refused to hand Grace over.

“He told me that if anything happened to him, I should protect the child until her parents could be reunited,” Margaret said. “He didn't ask for money. He didn't ask for favors. He just wanted the little girl to grow up safe.”

“What happened after Daniel left?” the investigator asked.

“Someone followed him. A few days later, I heard he was dead.”

Margaret's eyes filled.

“I wanted to tell Clara. I didn't know where she was, and I was afraid Richard would find her first.”

She revealed that Grace had been moved several times before Elena was able to reunite with her. Mother and daughter were now living under protective arrangements in another state.

Margaret did not know their exact current location, but she had a secure contact route.

The investigators arranged a protected call.

Vincent waited in a private room at the mansion while Margaret Shaw and the lead investigator remained present.

The screen lit up.

For several seconds, there was only a dark silhouette.

Then a woman stepped into view.

Dark hair.

Brown eyes.

A small scar near her left eyebrow.

Vincent stopped breathing.

“Elena?”

She covered her mouth.

“Vincent.”

He gripped the edge of the desk.

“You're alive.”

Tears ran down her face.

“Yes.”

He could barely speak.

“I thought you had left me.”

“I thought you had rejected me.”

They stared at each other, separated by four years of lies and a screen that suddenly seemed cruelly small.

Vincent swallowed.

“I should have found you.”

Elena shook her head.

“We were both lied to. I was frightened, and I made choices to protect Grace. I don't know if I can simply come home and pretend the years never happened.”

“I don't expect you to.”

She studied him.

“Are you still the man I married?”

Vincent looked down.

“I hope not. I have spent four years believing I was protecting the people I loved by keeping them outside my world. Richard used that distance to destroy us.”

He looked back at her.

“I won't ask you to trust me today. I only ask for the chance to show you that I can do better.”

Elena cried silently.

Then a small face appeared beside her.

Dark curls.

Blue eyes.

A stuffed rabbit tucked beneath one arm.

Grace.

Vincent's knees weakened.

“Hello, sweetheart,” he whispered.

The girl studied him with cautious curiosity.

“Are you my daddy?”

Vincent covered his mouth.

“Yes,” he said, his voice breaking. “I'm your daddy.”

Grace looked at Elena.

“Mommy said you were looking for us.”

“I was, sweetheart. I never stopped wanting to find you.”

She hesitated.

“Why didn't you come sooner?”

The question struck him harder than any accusation could have.

“Because I was told something that wasn't true,” he said gently. “And I didn't understand that you needed me. I'm sorry.”

Grace looked at him for a long moment.

Then she held up her stuffed rabbit.

“His name is Captain.”

Vincent laughed through his tears.

“That's a very good name.”

“Mommy says Captain protects me.”

“Then he's a very important rabbit.”

Grace considered that.

“Can you come see us?”

Vincent looked toward Elena.

“I would love to.”

Elena nodded slowly.

“Not alone. We'll coordinate with the investigators and choose a safe place.”

“Of course.”

Before the call ended, Elena turned to Clara, who had joined them by invitation.

“Clara, I owe you more than I can say.”

Clara shook her head.

“Daniel made his choice. He wanted Grace to live.”

“He also wanted you to live,” Elena replied. “And he left something behind to make sure you could.”

Clara placed a hand on her stomach.

“My daughter is due in a few months.”

Elena smiled sadly.

“Daniel told me you were expecting. He was so happy. He said he wanted your little girl to grow up knowing that doing the right thing mattered, even when it cost him.”

Clara's tears fell freely.

Then Elena said something that changed the room.

“Daniel also discovered that Richard had been using false medical records to threaten families who refused to cooperate with him. He feared Richard would target your pregnancy to force you into silence.”

Clara went pale.

“Was there something wrong with my baby?”

“No,” Elena said firmly. “The medical threats were fabricated. Daniel found evidence that Richard's people had altered records to frighten you and make you easier to control. He never found any proof that your daughter was ill.”

Clara closed her eyes in relief.

For months, Daniel had carried a fear he couldn't explain.

Now she understood why he had insisted that she keep every prenatal document, why he had begged her to see her own doctor, and why he had made her promise never to let strangers dictate her medical decisions.

The secret had not been that her baby was someone else's child.

It was that Richard had tried to use her unborn daughter as leverage.

Vincent looked at Clara.

“Your baby is not part of his scheme anymore. We'll make sure the investigators have every record Daniel preserved.”

Elena nodded.

“And we'll tell the truth about Daniel. He deserves that.”

May you like

For the first time, the people Richard had tried to separate were speaking to one another.

And somewhere beyond the screen, a little girl who had spent her life in hiding had finally met her father.
